Notification was made by Taylor Burton, director of the Utah Highway Department. According to Earl Johnson, head of the district office oi me nignway department at Cedar City, the Interstate Is still basically programmed to bypass Cedar City at an original designation desig-nation near 1300 West Street. This would place the Interchange, which residents of Cedar City have been seeking, at 1300 West and 200 North Street, which Is Utah Highway 56 Into western Iron County. Johnson Indicated, however, that the type of interchange hs not been determined. Th6 actual design of the Interchange, which will be the third programmed for the Cedar City area. w)l be completed com-pleted at a later date. Interchanges Interchan-ges on both the north and south ends of the city had previously been approved by the bureau with only the third interchange over Highway 56 in question. Other phases of the Interstate highway-system In the county are in progress Johnson stated. Programmed for this year the design and acquisition of rights-of rights-of ay for the Interstate highway high-way from Hamilton's Forth south to the Iron County-Washington County line where it will connect with that portion of the federal system, already constructed. At the present time the design of this stretch of the system is being accomplished in the district dis-trict road office at Cedar City. Within a month, Johnson said, the design should be completed at which time It will be turned over to the right-of-way department depart-ment In order that the property acquisition may begin.? It is imperative, he Indicated, that the design be completed so that adequate right-of-way may be acquired to fit the needs of the design. Civic leaders have welcomed the word from the Bureau of Roads. It Is felt by most that the addition of the third interchange will be an Important factor in making the community accessible accessi-ble to motorists traveling on the Interstate system. They also point out that at the north and south interchanges very littie of the community can be seen and that the third interchange located locat-ed within the city will give motorists, mot-orists, who have missed the oth-er oth-er interchanges an opportunity to come into the community. |
