Show Over 200 See 1 Progress on Escalante Tour Close to 200 persons, mostly businessmen and interested individuals in-dividuals from Iron county and northern Washington county, took part in the annual Escalante Escal-ante Valley tour which was made last Friday under the sponsorship sponsor-ship of the valley's coordinating council. Those who made the tour were able to see the tremendous development de-velopment in the area which has brought the valley from a desert des-ert region into a productive forming form-ing center. According to those in charge of the tour, the route of travel was an average one, not going necessarily through the best or poorest crop area. Starting from the school at Beryl Junction, the tour headed south to the Weyl-Zuekerman farm, comprising 4,000 acres, largest producer of seed potatoes in the Intermountain west. The group saw a large sprinkling system used on the farm instead of the gravity row system and also al-so saw a 1.000-head feed yard for cattle, utilizing surpluses of alfalfa and grain grown purely for rotation purposes on the potato pota-to farm land. Heading north, the group saw land being developed which was once abandoned as worthless, and saw top grade carrots near-ing near-ing the harvest stage. Also on the route of travel was one of the larger wells in the valley, located lo-cated on the Gibson ranch and pumping 1S00 gallons of water per minute. Other items included sheep and turkey raising, development devel-opment of new land and various irrigation systems. The tour was climaxed with a lunch served at the Dewey God-ard God-ard farm. Conducting the tour was Stephen L. Brower, Iron county agricultural agent. The farms inspected in the tour are located in the north end of the 835,000 acre valley, with 500,000 in Iron county. Over 15,000 acres are under pump well irrigation with 190 pump wells producing 50.000 acre feet of water last year. Committee in charge of the tour included: Tarlev Moyle. Bruno Bru-no Biasi, Bill Hunt," Mrs. Myrtle Thompson, Mrs. Doris Pederson. all of Beryl, Sterling Tullis, New-castle, New-castle, and Mr. Brower, Cedar Citv. |
