Show Softball Trophy Goes to Boulder City Nevada Club in Girls' Tournament Championship trophy for the Girls' StiftbaU Tourney'last week went tJ3 a strong squad from Boulder City, Nev., after eight teams battled on Friday and Saturday Sat-urday nthts before enthusiastic crowds at the Lions softhall field. Boulder City had de-ftealed de-ftealed the Biederman Hereford Farms ol Cedar City, 1 to 0, in another Ikriller and Pioche blasted blast-ed Hurrivane, 1G to 2. The sportsman- ship trophy went to the team from Pioche, and was presented by Mrs. Carl Hazel, president of the girls' softball association. The most valuable player award went to Rita Ann Smith, Cedar City, a member of the Biederman Bie-derman team who played continuously con-tinuously good ball in all of the contests. Her award was presented present-ed by Mrs. Charles (.amble, secretary sec-retary and treasurer of the association. as-sociation. The latter two awards were given by the association. Boulder City gained its berth in the finals by completely blanking Kndsley's Sporting Goods team the first night, 15 to 0. Biederman's encountered more resistance, stopping Milford 4 to 0, and Pioche squeezed by Milt's Circus Lounge of Cedar City, 5 to 4. In the other first night game Hurricane ed;;ed out Thornton Drug of Cedar City, 21 to 18. The first contest Saturday saw Boulder and Biederman's tied up scoreless going into the third inning. in-ning. However, a walk followed by a two-base error brought home the lone run which won the game for the Nevada team. Mabel Trost was on the mound for Boulder City and fanned five batters. Shirley Nelson of Biederman's Bie-derman's had equal skill on the mound and struck out five batters. bat-ters. Pioche turned the second game of the evening into a rout in turning back Hurricane 10 to 2. The championship game provided pro-vided the climax of the evening, with Pioche leading 4 to 3 going go-ing into the seventh and last inning. Two hits and three costly cost-ly errors gave Boulder City two additional runs and the championship. cham-pionship. Boulder scored first In the last half of the first inning and chalked up two runs. Pioche came back in the first half of the second with three runs to forge ahead, 3 to 2. Both went scoreless in the third and fourth, while Boulder collected 1 in the fifth and Pioche made two in the first half of the last inning to lead 4 to 3. Mabel Trost was again on the mound for Boulder City, while c. Condie did the pitching for Pioche. This marked the second annual an-nual tournament for the Cedar association. |
