Show Explorers Begin Trek Over Old Spanish Trail One hundred Explorers of the Utah National Parks Council, Boy Scouts of America, started out from Newcastle at 7 a. m. today to make the initial trek in retracing a portion of the old Spanish Trail as one of the events in Iron county's yearlong year-long centennial program. The explorers will travel that portion of the 150 year-old trail from Newcastle to Magatsu creek near Veyo in Washington county. Treks by other Utah groups and later from other western west-ern states will follow after the initial trek which got under way-early way-early this morning. Assembling with full packs, 1 the group was organized into crews for the three-day hike. The boys visited the old ox-showing stall in Newcastle used by immigrants immi-grants to California, before starting on the trek. Just west of Newcastle, the group divided, taking alternate routes to Mountain Moun-tain Meadows. The groups are scheduled to reassemble at Jacob Hamblin's old ranch and continue con-tinue on to Mountain Meadows for this evening's meal. Trucks will pick the Explorers up this evening and take them to the Pine Valley camp on the Dixie National forest, where they will stay until Saturday morning. Friday evening, William Wil-liam R. Indian dances in costume will be presented pre-sented by members of the Cedar Ce-dar City Powder Horn post. The Explorers will be returned to Mountain Meadows Saturday, where they will continue their hike to Magatsu creek. In the.evenlng, the group will be guests at a reception planned plan-ned by the St. George Chamber of Commerce. Following this initial in-itial trip, later treks over the trail will be maintained and sponsored by the Elks lodge at St. George. The trail was opened and set up through the contribution and help of the Automobile Dealers of Southern Utah; Cedar City and St. George Chambers of Commerce Com-merce and the St. George Elks lodge. All registered Explorers who complete the initial trip will be presented with a Spanish Trail medel by the automobile dealers association. |
