Show Mrs. D. Ned Sargent Selected to Be Welcome Wagon Hostess in Cedar Mrs. D. Ned Sargent of Cedar City returned home recently from Los Anpeles w here she completed a two-week course of instruction preparing her to represent Wei- j come Wagon, Inc. as hostess in this city. ) Welcome Wagon sersice wal originated in VJ2S by Thomas W. Briggs. a newspaperman of Memphis, Tenn. who adapted a custom of pioneer clays to present pres-ent day conditions. A student of American history, Mr. Briggs was stirred by the romantic talcs of the rugged men who blazed their trails to a new land across' the western plains. As the cov-1 vered wagons of the pioneers' wended their way toward the , frontier, homesteaders from scat-j tered settlements along the way met them in "Welcome Wagons" j with food and water to refresh the travelers at the end of their I long journey and extended a! hand of welcome. j That gracious tradition lives on today in Welcome Wagon. A modern version of "old-fashioned" hospitality and good will is extended to the families of a ; community at the crucial moments mo-ments of their lives. Daily, in 1(.C)0, throughout the United States and Canada in more than 10(10 towns and cities Over 1000 Welcome Wagon Hostesses Hos-tesses carried the good wishes of civic and business organization organiza-tion to mothers of new babies, Jteen age girls, newly engaged 'girls families moving from one home to another within the community com-munity and newcomers to the city. i The Welcome Wagon Hostess knows her town, and wherever she goes, she carries a word of its outstanding features its libraries, li-braries, .churches, newspapers parks, museums, youth groups, welfare associations, banks, shops, radio stations, restaurants, schK)ls and services. Mrs. Sargent has been active in civic and church affairs. She has served as president of the Parent-Teacher Association council, coun-cil, and has been an officer in P-TA organizations for the past eight years. She has served as president of the Lady Lions, was an officer in the Lady FJlks, and is president of the Second ward Primary association. She was selected by the Wei-I Wei-I come wagons state supervisor to J act as hostess in this community. |
