Show Safety Commissioner Urges Public To Read Leaflet Explaining New Law A small leaflet which explains all of the principal facts about Utah's new Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility law in five minutes' min-utes' reading time is now available avail-able to motorists throughout the state at any gas or service station, sta-tion, Public Safety Commissioner Joseph W. Dudlcr announced today. to-day. The leaflet was prepared and distributed by the Department of Public Safety as part of its program pro-gram to give the people adequate and accurate information about the Safety Responsibility Law between now and Sept. 1, on which date it takes full force and effect. It is written in simple, sim-ple, non-legal language and was particularly designed to acquaint the owners of private passenger cars and farm vehicles, who constitute con-stitute the great majority of the state's motor vehicle owners and operators, with the statute's purposes pur-poses and requirements. The leaflet is written in question ques-tion and answer form, to make it easily understood. There are only five questions what the law is, whom it effects, what to do after an accident, when motoring mo-toring privileges must be suspended, sus-pended, and how motorists may protect their driving and registration regis-tration licenses. The entire text uses only four pages of a leaflet that will fit conveniently into any pocket book. It is signed by Commissioner Dudler, as administrator admin-istrator of the law, to make it official. of-ficial. "I cannot speak too sincerely," the commissioner said, "when I urge every motor vehicle owner and operator in the state to drop in any gasoline or service station end ask the attendant for one of our leaflets. In fact, we have requested re-quested the attendants to hand one of the leaflets to every motorist mo-torist who stops at their station. If any motorist should find a station that is without a supply, I hope he will drop me a penny postal card and give me its name and location. I will mail him a leaflet and send a supply to that station in a hurry. "Any motorist who takes five minutes to read the contents of the leaflet will have all of the facts about this law that are likely to affect him or her. This law is for the benefit of everyone, particularly the motorists themselves, them-selves, who most frequently are the victims of traffic accidents. There is no rtason for it to bring hardship upon any owner or op erator who takes a very few min utes to understand and obey it. The state, through the Department Depart-ment of Public Safety, is making the information available to all. "I hope the law will be so thoroughly thor-oughly understood before it becomes be-comes effective, on Sept. 1, that our job of enforcement will be a very easy one. I certainly have no desire to pick up a motorist's operating license and registration registra-tion plates. Make no mistake, however, about our determination determina-tion to enforce it fairly and conscientiously. con-scientiously. This is a law to promote highway safety and pro-tect pro-tect the people against financial loss resulting from motor vehi- cle accidents when they do occur. It has been needed for a long time. It gives us no latitude for leniency, but in all sincerity we would not use leniency if we could. The highways of Utah must be made safe for everyone." |
