Show Construction Strike Hampers Work On Local Projects Although the construction workers strike in Utah has been partially settled, sufficient change has not been made to have any effect on local major building projects. When the strike was called work was stopped on the school buildings in Iron county, and a start of work on a new library and auditorium building at the Branch Agricultural college was delayed. Work has also been almost al-most at a standstill on the new Woolworth and J. C. Penney store buildings in Cedar City. Work on the Northwest Elementary Ele-mentary school building was stopped when the strike was called, as was work on the Parowan Paro-wan high school building. Work has not been resumed on either of them, although settlement of the strike is expected momentarily. momentar-ily. The contract for the construction construc-tion of the new library and auditorium audi-torium building at the college had been let, following many discouraging delays, shortly before be-fore the strike was called, and the contractor was ready to start work. However, no work on the building will be started until the strike is settled, the contractor reports. The only major building project pro-ject that was interfered with was the County Rest Home at Parowan. Work has continued on this project, with the contractor promising the workmen that they would receive the same advantages ad-vantages that the strikers gain when a settlement Is made. School officials of both the local lo-cal school district and the Branch Agricultural college are anxiously awaiting settlement of the strike so that construction work can be resumed or started as soon as possible, since facilities facili-ties to be provided by all of the buildings are badly needed for efficient operation of the schools during the coming year. |
