At the time of this writing, according to the nurses, no definite action has been taken by the Commissioners regarding that petition. As a result the major portion of the nursing staff will stage a mass resignation on Dec. 31 of this year, if prior to that time, the Commissioners have not seen fit to do something about the wage raises, representatives of the group state. In making this announcement the nurses pointed out that at one time the Iron County Hospital Hospi-tal wage rates were among the top in the state. However, the last wage increase that was granted at the local hospital was back in 1919 and at the present time the starting wage of $210 is the lowest low-est in the state of Utah. (See accompanying ac-companying chart). It was also pointed out that the $210 starting wage Is $50 less than the average starting wage in hospitajs throughout the state. The highest starting salary ir the state Is paid In the Salt Lake General Hospital with a starting figure of $2G0. In the Kane County Coun-ty Hospital the starting wage Is $242 and In Sevier Valley Hospital the starting wage is $10 higher per month than in Iron County at $220. Another factor that the nurses want brought to the attention of the public is the fact that compensation com-pensation for night work is given in the amout of 50c per shift for nurses and 25c per shift for nurses' aides. In addition a maxi-mum maxi-mum compensation rate of $10 has been set so that If a nurse works an entire month of night shifts, 30 in all, at the 50c per shift compensation she would be entitled to $15 but would receive the maximum of $10 in addition to the regular wage. The County Commissioners, according ac-cording to the nurses, have Indicated Indi-cated that a reduction In the force would allow for an Increase to the working nurses without further appropriation to the hospital hos-pital finances. The nurses also Indicated that one of the reasons for this thinking on the part of the Commissioners Is the fact that the hospital this year has had a low patient ratio. They hastened to point out that the Iron County area is vulnerable to accidents, with the principal industries of farming, mining, roads and other industries. Although Al-though the patient ratio has been low this year, that does not guarantee that 1956 will be the same, they said. The contemplated action on Dec. 31 will be taken in hopes that it might rectify the earning scale at the Iron County Hospital Hospi-tal In proportion to other hospitals hospi-tals of the state and nation, the nurses claim.
