Show CSU Broncos Tamed by Powerful Contenders in Ontario Tournament The College of Southern Utah! Broncos returned last week from! a three-game tour into southern' California. Monday night the Broncos played at Bakersfield, Calif, and moved Wednesday to Ontario, Calif, to participate in the annual Chaffey Junior College Col-lege tournament. Against the BakersfieJd Junior College the Broncos dropped a 66 to 45 contest that saw the Cali-fornians Cali-fornians pull away in the second half of play. At the end of the first half the Broncos were trailing trail-ing by only three points, 28 to 25, but the Bakersfield crew came out to take a commanding lead' early in the second half, and held it the rest of the way. New Ploys Tried All but two of the 12-man squad for the Broncos scored in the game, however, and Coach Cleo Petty tried a number of different dif-ferent combinations In the preseason pre-season warmup. Leading the scoring for the boys for the evening eve-ning was David Orton, Bronco Guard, with 15 points. He hit sev. en from the fiejd and one from the foul line. Next in line for the Broncos was Robert Hill with six! on threee field goals. The Bron-j cos hit only nine in 24 tries from i the foul line. I Wednesday morning at 9:30 the! Broncos opened the Chaffey tour-' nament against the Riverside Junior College. The Broncos were beaten out in the 73 to 72 duel that saw the Broncos outscore the Ca.'ifornians from the field by four field goals. The game was won from the free-throw lane with Riverside hitting 21 of 27 tries' compared to 13 in 31 tries for the Broncos. Rapid Tallies The game was tied at 66 all and it had see-sawed back and forth throughout. An illegal substitution sub-stitution while Riverside was shooting a foul proved the down-fall down-fall of the Broncos. The Riverside River-side lad at the free throw lane tanked both of his regular pitches and turned around and hit the technical foul pitch. Riverside took the ball out of bounds and scored another field goal before the Broncos regained possession with Riverside in lead 71 to 66. Bob Davis was high for the Broncos' Bron-cos' with 17 points on six field goals and five from the fowl lane. He was followed closely by Orton with 16 on eight field goals, and Dona.!d Floyd with 14 points on five field goals and four from the foul line. In the second game of play in the consolation bracket the Broncos met ML San Antonio College Col-lege and were dropped by a 53 to 78 score. Davis led the scoring with 11, followed by Dale Lang-ston Lang-ston with 10, Orton with eight and Wayne Allen with six. According to Coach Petty Ful-,'erton Ful-,'erton Junior College beat out Chaffey Jaycees in the championship champion-ship game to win the tournament tourna-ment honors. Fullerton will participate this evening and Friday in the four game series between CSU, Dixie, Wesminster and Fullerton. It was the fifth straight loss for the Broncos who lost to Tyler Junior College and Compton prior pri-or to making the California excursion. ex-cursion. The Broncos have one win to their credit, that against Chaffey Junior CoLlege in the opening game of the season. |
