Show Broncos Ride Herd on Indians Twice In Row to Officially Open Fieldhouse The Bronco basketball team officially opened the new field-house field-house on the Branch Agricultural Agricultur-al campus last week end, with two victories over the. Indians of the San Bernardino Valley college col-lege in California. The games served a double purpose, the official of-ficial opening of the fieldhouse assuring sport fans of southern Utah a chance to see many contests con-tests in an excellent athletic plant, and second to convince the fans that the BAC has the makings of a basketball team that should be in the thick of the ICAC conference race that opens early in January. The Broncos defeated the visitors vis-itors by scores of 68 to 67. and 62 to 53. In the opening game Friday the Broncos jumped into a commanding first half lead, but apparently "let down" in the second half to almost let the victory get away from them. They led 48 to 34 at halftime, but were hard put in the final minutes of the game to hang on to a one point margin of victory. vic-tory. Saturday night the visitors made a tough battle of it during dur-ing the first half but gradually fell behind in the second period i to lose by a nine point margin. The Broncos held a one point, 20 to 19 advantage after the first half of play. Coach Ray Lindquist opened the season play with a lineup composed of Captain Don Tuft, Max Bond, Erie Reese, Don Mcintosh Mc-intosh and Bob Horton, and held to that line-up during most of the two games except that Erie Reese was out of the second game because of an injury suffered suf-fered late in the first contest. Each of These five played excellent excel-lent ball. Tuft was outstanding in both games, leading his mates with remarkable coolness, covering cover-ing the bank boards well, and fitting well into both the offensive offen-sive and defensive pattern of the team. Mcintosh pleased the fans with his all-round ability, especially es-pecially in the first game. In addition to the starting lineup, line-up, boys who saw considerable action, and each of whome made a very good showing, were Hal Williams, Ray Hatch. Lewis Edwards, Ed-wards, Joe Valentine and Wayne Christensen. These boys will undoubtedly un-doubtedly continue to break into the lineup frequently. Coach Lindquist had 22 men in suit or the two games, including in-cluding a number of boys, who, on the basis of their performances perform-ances in high schools last year, should be very capable players. However, other than the players mentioned above, the squad members played only less than a minute for some of them, and only a few minutes for others,, giving them very little chance to show what they might be capable capa-ble of doing. Faye Ashworth. a promising squad member, did not see action ac-tion because of an ankle injury suffered In practice last week. Sport fans are convinced that the Bronco squad is packed with excellent individual players, and if the proper combinations can be worked out, the team should be in the thick of the champion-(hip champion-(hip battle. |
