COOLEY Evidence of widespread interest in the Rural Life and Education Conference to be held In Cedar City on February 8th and 9th is shown in the announcement made today by C B. Cooley, general gen-eral chairman, that a group of educators and directors of soil conservation from Bernalillo County, New Mexico, have asked to visit the conference o get Information In-formation as to how these types of conferences are run in Cedar City. Mr. Cooley states that the committee has boon notified by Supt. N. J. Barlow of the State Department of Public Instruction that during his recent visit to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to help plan a similar conference tor the western states region, he had many Inquiries concerning the work of the Cedar City Coordinating Coor-dinating Council. Upon learning that we were about to hold a Rural Life and Education Conference Con-ference a group of about six or eight people asked to come at participants in the conference. These will Include Frank Angel, Supervisor, and Simeon Nash, Ceramics Engineer for the Mountain Moun-tain Schools In Bernalillo County Coun-ty where a number of small mountain communities have been rehabilitated through the development of a new local industry. in-dustry. This industry was developed out of one of their natural resources re-sources a fine type of clay for use In pottery making, and the participants from New Mexico will bring examples for display during the local conference. They also have asked to have samples of the clay formerly used In Par-owan Par-owan for a similar project and , which is said to be one of the high grade types in the country- The county superintendent of Bernalillo county, Adolfo Chavez, will also be in attendance at the Cedar City conference, as will Victor Surface, Regional Director of Soil Conservation, and Henry Chavez, County Agent Mr. Cooley states that the conference con-ference is a workshop type which means that everybody participates partici-pates In dlscusion groups rather I than listening to a straight lecture lec-ture form of meeting. "And, while this Is one of the most difficult kinds of a public undertaking Involving In-volving much detailed work by the committee members, It is getting shaped into excellent form through the close cooperation coopera-tion of the people who are backing back-ing the undertaking," he said. Since a workshop, obviously, cannot succeed If parents and teachers do not attend, the committee com-mittee urges everyone who pos-'sibly pos-'sibly can to make plans to attend at-tend for the full two days and participate in one of the four workshop areas. We will have many out of town guests who are eager to visit this conference and .who will expect to see a good 'example of community cooperation coopera-tion grow out of such an activity. activ-ity. Some of the state's leading speakers are on the agenda for the two days. These will include Dr. O. Meredith Wilson of the University of Utah, Alan West, Executive Secretary UEA, Prof. Floyd Cornaby, head of the Art Department at Utah State Agrl-i Agrl-i cultural College, and Reed W. I I Bailey of the U. S. Forest Service i In Ogden. Another highlight will be a panel discussion by eight senior high school students, from the Cedar City and Parowan high schools, who will discus the topic, 'Zeal for American Democracy." An excellent colored film dealing deal-ing with soil conservation will be 'shown by Mr. Surface during the conference. This should be particularly par-ticularly appealing to people in our area and the picture may be repeated both days If necessary. At the Tuesday night meeting Dr. Wilson will speak to the subject, "Foundations for Faith In Democracy" and Miss Lois M. Clark, Assistant Director of Rural Services, National Education Association, As-sociation, will speak on "Emerging "Emerg-ing Patterns of Democratic Llv-lng." Llv-lng." Music will be furnished by the Master Singers. This meeting will be held in the First-Fifth Ward Chapel at 8 p. m. Special Interest groups of the M. I. A. are cooperating by attending as a class unit, according to J. C Haws, Stake Superintendent through whom the date has been cleared. J. Barlow, Ianthus Wright, County Superintendent of Schools., Dr. II. Wayne Driggs, Director of Branch Agricultural College, and Mrs. Fae D. Dlx, Coordinator, Co-ordinator, Iron County School District. The college and the county school district arc cooperating cooper-ating with the state department of education in the financial support sup-port of the undertaking. As has been formerly announced, announc-ed, schools will be closed throughout the county for the two-day meet to permit full attendance at-tendance of the teaching staffs. The education department of the Branch Agricultural college will be allowed to attend the conference confer-ence for the full jmtIoiI, according accord-ing to Dr. Ueese P. Maughan, director di-rector of the department. Theme for the conference is "Using tho Resources of Our Environment En-vironment for Improving Com munity Living." Workshop areas are divided into four as follows: Area 1, "Developing Community-School Community-School Relationships;" Areu 2. "Zeal for American Democracy;" Area 3, "Expanding Neighborhood Neighbor-hood Industries, Arts, and Crafts;" Area 4, "Making the Best Use of Our Natural Resources." Re-sources." It is expected that people peo-ple attending will register into their chosen group. Members of the Parent- Teacher Teach-er Association and tho Central Committee are making telephone calls to their groups to assign those participants to various sections sec-tions as a means of evenly distributing dis-tributing the membership. A registration re-gistration fee of 50c will be charged at the door to cover part of the expense. It Is hoped that the community will support this type of program which has been well done In some other counties but which Is being tried for the first time here. |
