Show Rescuers Reach Most Livestock Herds; Snow Stops Drifting Although snow continues 10 fall, breaking all known records, winds have subsided and as a result all cattle and sheep herds, insofar as we have been able to ascertain, had been reached by Wednesday, and food is moving mov-ing to the starving animals, giving giv-ing hope that the livestock loss resulting from the storms will not be as great as had been exacted. ex-acted. However, it is almost impossible impossi-ble to estimate at this time the loss that may result from the storms, because of the fact that present conditions will be reflected reflect-ed throughout the spring, in the lamb crop and the wool crop, and also in loss of sheep that may die later from the effects of feed shortages and cold at this time Every livestock owner seems to have sufficient feed to tide him over the winter, but is having hav-ing to pay .heavy prices for it. The problem has been one of getting the feed to the animals rather than obtaining feed. Most roads are now open, according to road officials and livestock owners, own-ers, and if there is no more wind it should be possible to keep them open. However, if the wind comes up again, the roads may be closed by drifts in a matter of hours. Wherever possible livestock men have moved their flocks closer to the roads In order to reach them more easily as long as the storms continue, and until un-til the snows melt. " Complete disaster In this section sec-tion was avoided by the wholehearted whole-hearted cooperation of every government gov-ernment agency, all of whom threw all equipment available In to the battle to clear the roads and break into the stranded herds, and through the quick action of owners and their employees em-ployees as soon as It became apparent ap-parent that the condition may become critical. New Harmony, which has been isolated most of the time since the storms struck, Is still snowed in. Crews were experiencing extreme ex-treme difficulty in breaking through the drifts, and had only gone about half the distance between be-tween the highway and the town this morning. The road should be open by nightfall unless new drifting starts. The Enterprise and Beryl areas, where the storms seemed to have reached their peak have been in about the same position as New Harmony. Enterprise especially, has been Isolated, except for very short periods, since the storms first struck the area. The road to Modena was closed until Wednesday afternoon.
