Show Council Hears Pleas For Street Improvements Two groups of property owners met with the City Council at Its meeting Thursday night to request that the city Include certain streets on the 1942 street oiling program. One group requested that First East street between First and Second North, the street .on the East side of the city park and swimming pool, be oiled. Their request was based on the fact that the construction of the swimming pool on the city park had greatly Increased the traffic traf-fic on this street, making improvements improve-ments necessary. The matter was referred to the committee on streets and sidewalks and the property owners were given assurance that serious consideration would be given giv-en the request. Tile second group asked that First East between Center and First North streets be Improved by oiling oil-ing and installation of curb and gutter. They were assured that this street had been placed on the two year program for oiling, but that In order to secure the curb and gutter It would be necessary for the property owners to guarantee the cost of materials for the project. Upon Uie request of Warren H. Bulloch, chairman of the Planning Oommtttee of the 'Iron County Civilian Defense Council, and J. Dean Fisher, chairman of the Finance Fin-ance Committee, an appropriation of $200 was made by Cedar City to help defray expenses of the defense de-fense program. Full cooperation with Uie Cedar City Beautlflcatlon committee and the Junior Chamber of Commerce Clean-up committee, in their respective res-pective programs was approved by the council. These groups requested the city to take the initiative in outlining a master plan or longtime long-time program of beautlflcatlon, in vrder that all civic groups might work toward a common goal. The council approved such a plan and promised continued support of all clean-up and beautlflcatlon campaigns. cam-paigns. It was pointed out that If the city took steps to remove the advertising ad-vertising sign boards along the highway at the approach to the city from the south, the state would probably furnish trees and shrubs and park the entrance to the city. The matter is to be investigated, according to committee and council members. |
