Show Bran Coun&y Civilian Defense Committee To srcage lag Pay Eight Men Leave For Army Training Eight men left Cedar City this morning under the Selective Service Ser-vice Act, to fill Iron County's quota ot men lor April. 'Hie men included Oliver Moroni Kllngonsmlth, Junius Jun-ius Taylor Walker, June Ahlstrom, EuDean Webster, Homer C. PurcelLs, Jr., Thomas Vein Holyoak, Earl Snuth and May D. Jensen. Duward B. McConnei of Cedar City and Elmer Veil Couch of Mo-dena, Mo-dena, were originally listed among the men to leave in April, but were deferred and replaced in the present pre-sent quota by Jensen and Smith. McConnell was deferred becau:,e of a supplemental notation by an Army doctor In Los Angeles that a physical condition should be corrected cor-rected before induction. He had previously pre-viously been passed by the examining examin-ing board. Couch was deferred pending pen-ding the outcome of an appeal for deferrment because of dependency. These men were honored at a patriotic meeting and program held In the public school auditorium Thursday night and at a farewell breakfast this morning. The program pro-gram lust week was arranged by the Cedar City Morale Committee of Uie Civilian Defense Council, and was attended by local residents. Everyone Ev-eryone who attended was well pleased pleas-ed with this farewell guesture and the committee has been highly complimented com-plimented for taking the Initiative In honoring young men leaving for the service. The committee plans to continue this activity with a farewell function func-tion of some kind planned for each month, at which all who leave for service during the month will be honored. The brcukfast was under the sponsorship spon-sorship of the Cedur Post of the American Legion. This practice hus been carried on by the American Legion for some time and will be continued, it is understood. The Finance committee of Uie Iron County Civilian Defense Council, Coun-cil, composed of J. Dean Fisher, chairman, Dr. John Beal, and Arthur Joseph, have arranged for a "lag Day" as a means of raising rais-ing funds to cany on the program and also to make people more conscious con-scious of the problem that faces them. Verne Cooley, Principle of the Cedar L. D. S. Seminary, will be In charge of Uie tag day program, and has solicited the help of Uie Boy Scouts of the Cedar Breaks district and a number of young Indies to carry on the activities. "Tag" are to be sold as Popples are sold by the American Legion Poppy Day. Each tag will cost 25c and It Is hoped that every citizen will buy a tag and help an Important Import-ant cause. The event Is to be staged Saturday, April 11th., and on Hint day Boy Scouts will visit every home in the county, and girls will be stationed sta-tioned on the Main streets of each town, to contact those who may be missed at home. It ls important that people of the county recognize the fact that u civlliun defense problem faces them, and that they overcome the complacent Idea that "it can't happen hap-pen here". There ls much preparation prepara-tion needed if we are to cope with any disaster that might befall our section, personnel must be trained to carry on the various activities needed If disaster from any source should come. All this costs money and It Ls hoped that people respond generously In order that our defenso council will not be handicapped in carrying on their work. At present we seem to be far removed re-moved from the danger zones, but this Ls all-out war, and demoralization demoraliz-ation of the civilian population Is very definitely a part of our enemy's program. We must be protected from acts of sabotage that might disrupt transportation, endanger our water supply, or any number of things that might be undertaken by enemy agents. We should be prepared pre-pared to care for our population in case of bombing no mutter how remote re-mote that possibility might be. Although our Immediate vicinity Is not attacked, there ls a grave possibility that coast cities will be bombed and in that case we undoubtedly un-doubtedly would face the possibility of evacuees moving Into this area, and we must be prepared to care for them. There Is plenty of reason to be lieve that the civilian defense organization or-ganization will be called upon In muny capacities, and you can do your part by purchasing a "tag" Saturday, and also by offering your services In the many phases of the Job to be done. |
