Show Plane Crash Takes Life of Student Pilot The first student pilot fatality in Utah since the inception of the C. A. A. training program, occured in St. George Saturday, November 20, when Gerald Shumway, 20, of Blandlng, C. A. A. student pilot at the Dixie junior college, was killed as his plane plunged into a steep-walled steep-walled lava gully skirting the eastern east-ern end of the St. George airport, a few minutes after he took off from the runway on a solo flight. An investigation into the fatal crash was conducted at the St. George airport Sunday by Joe Bergen, Ber-gen, director of the Utah aeronautics aeronau-tics commission, and Major Earl Hughes, C. A. A. inspector, both of Salt Lake City, and E. R. Mitclielt, C. A. A. fafety bureau representative, representa-tive, and E. Carpenter, Sr., C. A. A. flight supervisor, both of Sanl.i Monica, California. None of the officials of-ficials would comment on the findings find-ings of the investigation, however, saying a statement would be released re-leased soon by the C. A. A. board. People at the airport who witnessed wit-nessed the crash reported that Shumway had not attained more than 500 feet altitude when his ship nosedived into the gully. Memorial rites were conductel Sunday morning in the St. George South L. D. S. ward chapel by Bishop James A. Adrus, while funeral fun-eral services were held Monday afternoon af-ternoon in the Blanding L. D. S. Ward by Bishop John D. Rogers. Burial was in the Blanding cemetery. ceme-tery.
