Show Elks Lodge Will Sponsor Patriotic Essay Contest 'The local Elks Lodge has launched a national patriotic essay contest among students of high school age in which local winners will not only receive prizes offered by the Cedar City Lodge, but will also be eligible for big national prizes. Exalted Ruler Clarence Lamor-eaux Lamor-eaux of the local Lodge of Elks announced an-nounced today that the local de-, dense committee appointed by him and consisting of Reuben J. Shay, chairman; Alex H. Rollo, M. D. Watson Wat-son and Ilex Harris, in cooperation with school authorities, is distributing distribut-ing the poster cards and rules gov-erninc gov-erninc the contest. This patiiotic contest Is unique in that it calls for an analysis of the painting of Uncle Sam in addition addi-tion to writing a 300 to 500 word essay on "What Uncle Sam means to Me." The picture is a composite paint ing of Uncle Sam by the well known artist, C C. Beall. It was recently presented to President Roosevelt by members of the Commission and will be used by the War Department Depart-ment as a national defense poster. At a distance of ten feet, it is a remarkable portrait of Uncle Sara held up close it becomes a group of individual people and things which go to make up the elements in our national defense. Students can obtain the rules of the contest from their school principals prin-cipals and from members of tho Elks Natonal Defense Committee or from Secretary Ralph Adama. Local merchants are also displaying display-ing the Uncle Sam poster in their windows. The rules of the contest are printed on the back of these poster card.5. |
