Show Legislators Make Biennial Junket To Southern Utah A total of 133 visitors, including 66 legislators, 52 of them Representatives Repre-sentatives and 14 Senators, made the bi-annual Junket trip to the Branch college at Cedar and Dixie college in St. George Saturday and Sunday. The group spent Saturday and Saturday night in St. George, returning Sunday morning to spend the day visiting in Cedar City before returning to the State Capitol Cap-itol The visitors were entertained at a luncheon at the Branch College Sunday noon, after which a public meeting was held at which the specific spe-cific needs of the Branch college were presented by Director Henry Oberhansley, and President E. G. Petersen. M. J. Urie, chairman of the B. A. C. committee of the Board of Trustees. Speakers besides Mr. Oberhansley and Mr. Petersen were the Speaker of the House, President of the Senate and important Senate Sen-ate and House committee chairmen. A request for an appropriation of $100,000 for building purposes at the college was made, and attention called to the fact that it is imperative imper-ative that funds be received to preserve pre-serve the present buildings, and to make them more adequate for school needs and less hazardous from a standpoint of fire. Members of the Education and Appropriation committees com-mittees of the legislature conferred with school officials upon details of the needs listed, showing a greater great-er interest in the problems of the school than has been exhibited on any previous Junket. The visitors were the guests of the Chamber of Commerce at a banquet at the Escalante hotel at 6 p. m.. at which Mayor H. H. Lunt, and Warren H. Bulloch, chairman of the Board of Iron County Com-mislsoners, Com-mislsoners, presented a plea for the continuation of the present means of distribution of automobile license plate funds. Most of the legislators, however, apparently had already reached decisions on this matter and were not concerned about opinions of local officials because a great many of those present failed even to show courtesy of listening to the speakers. Following the banquet the visitors were again guests of the college at the presentation of the "Messiah", which was one pf the finest yet attempted here. A series of tableaus were used In the presentation, the first time this had been attempted, and added much to the enjoyment of the occasion. |
