The. city of Chicago, through Mayor Harrison, has extended to Admiral Dewey an invitation, which the admiral has accepted, to visit Chicago the first !f next May, that being the second anniversary an-niversary of Admiral Dewey's entrance into Manilla bay. This incident is worths- of note, owing ow-ing to the fact that when the bigots in the nation's capital were doing their best to make life miserable for the admiral. ad-miral. Chicago, with delicate grace and generous spirit, extended her invitation, invita-tion, which was obviously intended to reassure Admiral Dewey of the nation's gratitude, as well as to obtain an op-' op-' poitunity for the people of Chicago and the boundless west to give fitting expression ex-pression to the personal respect in which they hold the distinguished I sailor. ! In individuals the remembrance of I particular acts of kindness and hero- I 5sm soon passes away, and it is pleas- I ing to observe that in the rush of ma- j terial things it was the metropolis of the great west that showed itself mindful mind-ful of the unprecedented heiroism of Admiral Dewey, as well as appreciative appreciat-ive of the individual act of kindness which had brought sorrow to his heart from the ungrateful and the unthink- Iinp. j "Well done.
