Show Panhandlers The daring little chipmunk abounds throughout Bryce Canyon O country. It has dark stripes from its nose to the base of its tail which v curves high above its back as it runs. It nests beneath stumps, logs, and in crevices, coming out to eat grasses, seeds, nuts, fruits and insects. in-sects. The layer of fat it stores tides it over through hibernation. Some food is also stored in its nest for eating when it awakens in spring. Feeding chipmunks and squirrels is tempting because they are so appealing, ap-pealing, but they are wild and can be dangerous. Their bite is not only painful but can also be very dangerous to humans hu-mans as they carry bubonic plague, rabies and other diseases. All bites require first aid and possibly medi-IJ medi-IJ cal attention. Chipmunks in the more com monly visited areas of the county may become quite dependent upon ood from visitors. Aggressively seeking food, they may climb up People's pant legs and into bags or purses. They may bite a finger or a hand which holds no food because they wpect to find food there. Winter 1989 |
