Show Panguitch Splits A Pair At Home By John Yardley There was some good news and some bad for the Panguitch High Bobcats last weekend. The worst was first, as the Bobcats lost a league "counter" to Valley 61-50 on Friday night. It was a lough loss for Panguitch on their home turf and dropped them from a tie for the league lead. The second game, played Saturday, was much better for PHS as they defeated one of the co-leaders in Division 2 or region 12, Beaver, 75-65. On Friday, the Bobcats were cold as ice, missing many, many easy shots inside and only scoring a total of 24 points in the first three quarters. quar-ters. Maybe the sub-zero weather outside got to the Bobcats, because they simply could not "throw it in the ocean" as they say. Finally in the final period, the offence got going go-ing and the easy shots went in, as PHS scored 26 points in the final eight minutes. Valley played a very good game, with a hard-nosed defense and crafty offensive play, and should be credited cred-ited with a great win to keep themselves them-selves in a three-way tie for first in the division. ' In' a dismal offensive showing, PHS only scored 15 points in the first half. Leading the way, finally, were Gary 'xach with 14 and Jason Miller with 9 points. Wade Esplin and Ardcn Smith were terrific for Valley and Coach Him Hoyt. On Saturday night, Coach Ted Chidcstcr's team was without starting start-ing guard Chris Hcnric, out with a badly sprained ankle, but despite that, they played one of their best home games of the year. Beaver has been ranked as high as second in some 1-A polls, and the Bobcats simply "took it to 'em." Sophomores Sopho-mores Chris Mathews and Jon Savage came off the bench to play nearly three quarters each in the game to spark the Bobcats. David Tebbs hit some critical outside shots against the zone and Gary Leach went to work "in the paint" in the second half against the man to man to provide one of the best combinations of scoring on the year. Travis Hatch, Jason Miller, and Ryan Prince all played solidly as well, in a big team win. Mathews Math-ews led all scorers with 23 points, including two three pointers, as he displayed a fine array of inside board crashing and outside finesse. Leach pounded in 17 second half points, followed by Tebbs and Hatch with 9 each. . Despite the league loss, the Bobcats have to be buoyed with the win over Beaver, always one of the tougher teams in Region 12. This week, PHS travels to Wayne on Friday, for a game to be heard on KMXU radio at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow night. On Saturday, another an-other formidable visitor comes into town in the form of the Kanab Cowboys, the only team so far to defeat Beaver in league play in the other division. First things first this week, however, as the Bobcats need the league win over Wayne, more than they need the "crowing rights" over Kanab. |
