Show Boulder - ; Grover Road BOULDER Frosted in winter ' white, the scenery over the course J of the Boulder to Grover Road, now completely paved, offers the traveler a winter fantasyland and the shortest link between Bryce Canyon and 1 Capitol Reef National Parks. The 32-milc long section of road 1 traverses 9,200-foot Boulder Mountain where wintcr-grey stands of quaking aspen and frozen mountain moun-tain lakes contrast with the warm desert beyond. The road is not regularly maintained main-tained in the wintertime, but it is kept open to the best of the ability of local road crews who recognize its importance to the area as a major ma-jor connecting link between the two parks. The Boulder Mountain Road opens to view from the Aquarius Plateau one of the widest vistas to be seen as travelers look out upon the magnificent terrain that nestles in Capitol Reef National Park and some of the most unusual geography geogra-phy on the face of the earth. The road benefits the tourist by cutting off some 50 miles of the trip between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks. The road has been in use since it began as a simple mountain trail connecting connect-ing the folks who live in Boulder in ihc north central part of Garfield County w ith the folks who live in Grover in the southern section of Wayne County. The Aquarius Plateau consists of some 70 square miles of heavily forested timbcrland rising above the surrounding desert country to elevations of more than 11,000 feet. From its lofty heights, tourists can sec Capitol Reef, the Circle Cliffs, the Henry Mountains, the Kaiparowits Plateau, Navajo Mountain and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The views in wintertime arc particularly spectacular because of the incredibly clean, clear air. Numerous small lakes and streams, frozen over most of the winter, dot the area and provide pro-vide excellent fishing in warmer months, inviting the winter traveler to come back again when everything every-thing "greens up." |
