Show Overseas Tourism For Utahns Jumps Overseas tourism in Utah jumped 181 percent from 1985 to 1987 for the fastest growth in the nation according to "Utah Traveler," Trav-eler," a publication of the Utah Tr- , ! Council. Utah hosted 113,000 overseas visitors in 1985 but that number jumped to 318,000 in 1987 according accord-ing to figures released by Foremost West, A Salt Lake City-based company that promotes Utah and four other western states in overseas over-seas markets. Of the countries on the European Euro-pean continent, Utah gets the greatest number of visitors from Germany, followed by the United Kingdom, France and Italy in that order. Four other western states registered regis-tered hefty increases during the same period: Arizona (97 percent), Colorado (53 percent). New Mexico (125 percent), and Wyoming (120 percent). Persistence and favorable exchange ex-change rates are the reasons for the dramatic increases, says Foremost West President Brad Smith. "For the past 14 years," he said, "we have been working hard to get foreign for-eign tour operators to include us in their catalogues. And now that the dollar is lower, and our efforts are really paying off." The Foresmost West has the second largest foreign travel listings list-ings of any regional marketing organization or-ganization in the U.S. |
