Show Moquis Lose Twice By John Yardley The Escalante Moquis ran into two tough opponents on the road last weekend in giving up losses to league co-leader Piute 72-55 and to Parowan, who always is good at home, 61-50. The Moquis, still hampered by the ankle injury to Martcll Simons, fell behind Piute by 10 points, 23-13, 23-13, in the first quarter and never could recover on Friday night. Escalante Es-calante actually outscorcd the T-Birds T-Birds 19-17 in the second, but Piute pushed ahead even more in the final two periods for the 72-55 win over Jimmy Smith's Moquis. Brian Koundy had another fine game with 24 points and was assisted as-sisted in scoring by a host of others, oth-ers, most notably, Ammon Carter and Todd Olsen who hit for 7 each. Again, All-Stater Jason Torgerson blasted a Garfield team, as the smooth senior tanked in 28 for Piute. On Saturday, the Moquis hoped for better things, but they hit a cold streak in shooting much like Panguitch Pan-guitch did on Friday night. Escalante Es-calante trailed 15-1 1 at half time, as Parowan wasn't much better. After falling behind 33-21 at the end of three, the Moquis fired back to score 29 in the last period, but alas, Parowan picked it up, too, and put in 28 themselves to make the final 61-50. Saturday was rather disheartening for a team that is usually a deadly shooting team from the perimeter. Brian Roundy hit for 14 and Todd Olsen scored 15 as the only Moquis in double figures. This week, Escalante hits the road once again, as they travel to Ordcrville, to play one of the league leaders, the Valley Buffaloes. The Moquis are more than capable of beating Valley and perhaps with the cold shooting out of the way last weekend, they can pull off the upset at Valley. |
