The little town was founded in 1876, the first of the three Bryce Valley towns, when about 200 families lived in the fertile valley irrigated with water from the Paria River. Proving unreliable, the river and its tributaries eventually cut deeply into the farmlands and water was finally brought into Cannonville from the East Fork canal into Tropic. In the spring along the ditch banks wild asparagus is abundant and in summer, gardens abound. The very civic-minded little community com-munity has been honored for its self-improvement efforts more than once and its community center was built by a concerned citizenry. It is the home of the Bryce Valley Clinic which offers medical services ser-vices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. With a population of approximately approxi-mately 160 people, Cannonville children are bussed, along with those from nearby Henrieville, to Tropic to school. There is a general store and gasoline is available in town. An old gas pump stands near one old building at the edge of town, decked with a sign that says, "Too pooped to pump!" Nearby unusual rock formations seem to embrace the little town in a picture-frame setting. Its community park in the center cen-ter of town was developed wholly by local residents and offers a restful rest-ful spot for families to spend a summer evening and for their chil dren to play.
