Show rDixie National Forest 2 Million Acres Of Public Lands I The Dixie National Forest oc-I oc-I cupies almost two million acres, and stretches for about 170 miles across southern Utah. The largest National Forest in Utah, it straddles the divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado River. The southern rim of the Great Basin provides spectacular scenery, and the Colorado River canyons break away in many colored cliffs and steep wall gorges. Important wildlife species include in-clude mule deer, elk, antelope, mountain lion, turkey, black bear, grouse and rabbit. There are approximately 3,019 surface acres of fishing waters in lakes and reservoirs and 224 miles of stream fisheries on the Forest. Red Canyon is one of the most spectacular colored cliff canyons in '! southern Utah. The red weather's weather-'s sculptured formations of the Wasatch Limestone are contrasted i by giant Ponderosa Pines and ancient an-cient Bristlecone Pines, providing variety and scale to this photographer's photogra-pher's dream. Located in the heart of the Dixie National Forest on highway 12, visitors can experience its brilliant red spires and cliffs by car or by hiking one of the nature , trails in the canyon. Visitors can stay in the canyon in the modern Red Canyon campground or stay at one of the motels in the area and visit the many points of interest on - the Dixie National Forest. In a day's drive the visitor can hike in the Pine Valley, Ashdown George or Box-Death Hollow Wilderness Areas, see scenic Navajo Lake, fish at popular Pan-guitch Pan-guitch Lake, experience Red Canyon, take a free tour of the East Fork of the Sevier River or see the scenic BouldcrGrover road on the Boulder Mountain.
