The following information was Vplied by Nedra Johnson, Midarist at Bear Valley Junction at i utah Highway 20 and U.S. 89 north jof Panguitch. Letters A, B and C refer to the center map for easier '' locating of rockhunting sites in the 'county, indicated by small rock ! hammers on the map. j (A) RED, YELLOW AND GREEN - BANDED AGATE '' NODULES Turn east on Sanford : Creek Road where it connects with ; u s. 89 about seven or eight miles ' north of Panguitch. Go past the sand i gravel pits where beautiful ; samples will be found in the creek ;bed 1 (A) BLUE AND RED AGATE fat the south end of Panguitch Lake just west of the highway in the area called The Meadows. (A) BLUE AND RED PLUM AGATE Turn east from U.S. 89 on Casto Canyon Road about three to four miles north of the junction with Utah Highway 12. Travel on the dirt road about three miles to find blue and red agate along the road and up the hillsides. (A) FOSSILS, CRUSTACEONS Out of Antimony, take the Antimony Creek Road east of the bridge to a picnic-parking area. Fossils are found in mountains northeast of the parking area. (A) SEPTARIAN NODULES Take the Forest Service road from Alton east for about six and one-half miles. The turnoff to Alton is found three miles south of the junction of Utah Highway 14 with U.S. 89 in Kane County. (B) PETRIFIED WOOD Turn off at Cannonville on the road to Kodachrome Basin State Reserve. Travel past the turnoff to Kodachrome, staying on Cot tonwood Canyon road until the Grosvenor Arch turnoff. Petrified wood is found north of the arch and fossils on the hillside. (b) Continue on Utah Highway 12 one mile past the Escalante post office to the parking area with trees. Stop and follow the trail to the point that you pass under the power lines on top of the hill where you will find red, yellow, brown and black petrified wood. (B) Take Utah Highway-12 ten miles east of Escalante on Spencer Flats sign. Follow the road for five miles. As you pass a large rock on the right you will see what looks like a large paved parking lot on the left the Moqui Indian marble and ball field iron sandstone concretions. The spheres are filled with red iron sand and are also found imbedded in red sandstone. (B) RED AND YELLOW JASPER found approximately 16 miles past the Spencer flat sign on Utah Highway 12 on both sides of the road (See Rock Hunters Page 6 B) ROCK HUNTERS (Continued From Page 5 B) between Escalante and Boulder. This was also an area the Indians used for making points, evidenced by the abundance of flakes. (B) RED AGATE, UNFRAC-TURED UNFRAC-TURED Some of the finest un-fractured un-fractured red agate may be found by taking the Hole-in-the Rock road east of Escalante to a point about 23 miles southeast. Take the first dirt road that leads right and travel for about three-quarters of a mile. Hike about two miles west. (C) RED AGATE, COPRALITE, JASPER, DINOSAUR BONES - all are found in an area near Stan-Springs Stan-Springs between Utah Highway 376 and the Notom road in Capitol Reef National Park.
