Show Garfield Schools To Observe Lunch Week Menus representing four areas of the country will be featured at most cafeterias in Garfield School District during the week of Oct. 14- 17, as National School Lunch Week is celebrated. "Salute to freedom" is the theme for the week, and the four special menus, suggested by the American School Food Service Association, which sponsors the celebration are built around chili (western), hamburger (midwstern), chicken (southern), and turkey (eastern). During this special week, parents will be invited to have lunch with their students. National School Lunch Week is celebrated annually to highlight the program that since 1946, has made wholesome, nutritious, low-cost lunches avilable daily to students. One third of a child's daily nutrition needs is supplied through school lunch. According to Garfield School District's food service director, Laural Holman "Our school lunchrooms are more than just filling stations for empty stomachs." Children are also introduced to new foods, taught better food choices, and provided with the nutrition that is vital to mental and physical growth. Cost is 80c for elementary children; 90c for high school students and $1.50 for adults, Since there will be only a half day of school on Friday, Oct. 18, no school lunch will be served that day. |
