Show Generally Good Deer Harvest Predicted For Southern Utah Area Utah's general deer season opens Oct. 19 and continues through Oct. 29 with promises of an exciting and successful hunt as both resident and out-of-state hunters get ready for the annual 10-day event. State Division of Wildlife Resources conservation officers will be in the field to ensure a safe and legal deer hunt. During the past five years, they have become known as some of the most professional and up-to-date law enforcement .oil leers . in the west. By using technological advances such as metal detectors, determining time of death of animals, using wildlife service dogs and advanced evidence-collecting techniques, conservation officers are now able to apprehend an unusually high number of wildlife regualtions violators. To help the hunter legally get his deer, the southern regional office of the DWR prepared the following hunting forecast: Antimony, (Mt. Dutton) area deer hunting is expected to be as good as last year according to the forecast. The north end of the mountain produces more deer than the south, access is good on existing roads. October 8, brought the first snow of winter Into Red Canyon. The snow laces over the red hills bringing a Pre-season and post season an tlerless hunts are being held to remove deer causing problems in the fields near Antimony. Hunting on South Boulder continues to improve. A good harvest is expected again this year. Production is good and more deer are observed on the unit. Best hunting is on the east and southeast part of the unit. Good hunting is also found on the west slopes of John's Valley, The Parowan unit " in the Panguitch Lake area is expected to be good over the entire area. The area extends from 1-15 to US 89 and from U-20 to U-14. Access is good on existing roads. Hunter success has improved over the past few years. In an effort to control use on the winter range and to solve some of the damage to the farmlands on the west side, a post season anterless hunt will also be held. Hunting on the Paunsauguant will be by limited entry permit only and limited to 200 hunters. This unit has been closed for five years and should produce some large bucks. For the hunters who favors other arpas, the DWR offers the following information: Hunting is expected to be good on the Parker Mountain for small bucks and fair on the remainder of the unit for larger bucks. Fishlake hunting is expected to be good although the bulk of the harvest is expected, to be small deer. Hunting success on Last Chance will depend heavily on storms. If storms occur before the opener the hunting should be good; if it is still hot and dry the harvest Is expected to be slow to poor, The Monroe herd is expected to yield only a fair harvest with mostly ... small bucks being taken. Oak Creek has a three points or better hunt this year. Hunting will be fair since a majority of the herd will not qualify tor the harvest regulation this year. The Fillmore area should be good. The harvest has increased and there has been a large carry-over from last year. West Zion hunting was good last year and is expected to repeat. Hunters should be aware that most of the mountain lane on this unit is private end that permission to hunt should be obtained from the different landowners. A post season antlerless hunt will be held on the northwest portion of this unit. East Zion still has a low deer population and hunting will be slow again this year. West Pine Valley Mountains had a harvest increase last year with good hunter success and is expected to repeat this year. The DWR states that much of the hunting depends on the weather, amount of moisture, any disturbance from early hunters moving into the area, etc. and that the hunting predictions can only be estimates. i |
