Show Escalante Events Marilyn Jackson Hunters came into twon with trucks, tents, travel-trailers and three-wheelers. Ray Christian and his father, Walter Christian from Ivins, each got their antelope and are eagerly looking forward to the regular deer hunt. David Reid bagged an elk. Dr. Warren Woolsey came through on his way hunting as did Alvin Cowles and Elmo Procell. Elmo has a trailer parked behind the home of his brother-in-law, Reid Wooley. Orange is everywhere autumn trees, Halloween decorations and hunters all adorned with the color. Rochelle Heap, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don (Deanne) Heap of Cedar City was chosen high school Homecoming Queen there. He formerly taught LDS seminary in Escalante. Reed Munson went to Salt Lake City to purchase materials to begin the home of Wanda Mellor. He also has a bid to build a storage shed at the church. Melba Brooks and mother, Lenora Griffin, accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Dawn) Griffin and met Mr. and Mrs. Claron (Ruby) Griffin in Parowan for the wedding and reception of nephew, Gaden Griffin. The newlyweds left for a week-long honeymoon in Hawaii. Lenora then accompanied Pole Griffin and new wife, Rose, to Huntington. While there, they visited with LaRue Griffin and report she is doing nicely. Visitors at the Elden Griffin home were Amber's father, Howard Olcott, Richfield and sisters, Aleithe DuBravac, Alexandria, Virginia; and Angie and husband Bob Childs of Orem. The Griffins later went to Richfield for medical appointments for twins, Susan and Sarah. A conscientious effort is being made by law enforcement officials and citizens to curb lawlessness. Cars are being properly inspected, licensed and registered. Parking problems are being corrected and parents are helping with curfews and young drivers. Everyone is encouraged to use crosswalks. The City is working to have flashing lights installed for use during school hours to help with problems of safety there. Bill Stout, son of former South-Central Utah Telephone manager, Fred Stout, has received his LDS mission call to serve in the Mesa Temple. Beth Burr took a vacation from Bank of Iron County. She Joined her sister, Joyce Poulson of 'Pleasant Grove, Joyce's daughter, and their mutual friend from Cedar City for a tour of California. They went by way of Lake Tahoe and into San Francisco for a lovely trip. The Gene Griffin's have poured a tennis court behind their home. Niece, Marilee Griffin has moved to Arizona where she will work in a Mervyns Store. Tony Coleman and Celia ("Missy") Poteet were married Saturday near the Boulder Hydro Plant. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Poteet of Escalante and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Coleman of Boulder honored them with a recpeiton held at the LDS cultural hall that evening. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon (Cora) Shakespear came to see her sister, Ethel Griffin. Ethel later accompanied Helen Shurtz to Cedar City. Beth Coleman brought Craig Twitchell to help with closing their home for winter. Craig lives in Fort Worth, Texas where he is employed with an oil-related business. The LoRell Munsons had daughter, Maureen Nelson and children with them this past week. They took her to Salt Lake City on their way to medical appointments. Son, Milan Munson attended LDS General Conference while there. Mr. and Mrs. Blake (Betty) Schow came for a few days to finish painting and carpeting the Shurtz home. Jim Palazola's sister and husband, Owen Bennett brought Jim's 94-year-old mother up for a visit. The Bennetts own the lot where George Spencer once lived. The family of Herman and Maude Spencer honored them at an open house in Taylorsville celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple were married October 14, 1935. Sister, Mary Ellen Coleman and her husband Hyrum were there for the festivities, with other sisters, Nora Youngdale, Alice King and brother Alfred Heaps. The Spencers have seven married children: Phyllis Ann, Joe H., Linda Rae, Wilma, Dorothy, Bob and Ruth. All were in attendance, except Joe who lives in California. Mr. and Mrs. Hyrum Coleman brought daughter, Valerie Davies and youngest daughter home with them. Beverly Kuhns took her husband, Bill to St. George for a medical checkup. Ethel Foster returned after spending time with her family and friends in Colorado and New Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Amy Chestnut) Banner of Midvale spent the weekend with her sister, Maralda Porter. The Ken Schows and Edson Alveys toured Southeastern Utah and Colorado sight-seeing in Mesa Verde National Park and other points of interest along the way. Students anxiously' await' Utah Education Association (UEA) weekend which begins tomorrow. |
