Show Garfield Students Vie For 'Sterling' Honors Five Garfield county students will be among the 53 finalists from eight high schools In Garfield, Iron, and Kane school districts competing in the first year of the Southwest Sterling Scholar program. Final judging will take place at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City on April 19. One winner and two runners-up will lc selected in each of the twelve educj6ional categories. Kach winner will receive a $200.00 cash award, and each runner-up will receive $100.00 to le used at the college or university of his or her choice. The purpose of Hie Sterling Scholar Program is to reward students for j demonstrating excellence . and outstanding Theresa Breinholt achievement in the academic, vocational and fine arts areas. Suzanne Clanin, Panguitch High School senior, was honored for her skill in foreign language. She is a daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Susan Clanin John O. Clanin and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Jenkins. The art of homemaking won honors for Teresa Breinholt, another Panguitch High senior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. gerald Breinholt. Judged outstanding in Jolene Nelson the social science field was Lorell Rose, Bryce Valley High School senior, a daughter of David and Delpha Rose of Henrieville. Business education was the special field of endeavor which won special sssL "Wimi ii asssH Lorell Rose honors for Jolene Nelson, Bryce Valley High School senior, a daughter of William and Bonnie Nelson of Cannonville. Recognition for general scholarship excellence went to Ralph Clarke, son' of Michael and Erma f Ralph Clarke Clarke of Cannonville. Most of the colleges and universities in Utah have offered fall tuition scholarships to the winners with masny of the educational in-strutions offering half-tuition scholarships to the runners-up. |
