Show Spelling Bee Winners Named After Contests TROPIC The regional spelling bee competition, in preparation for the upcoming National Spelling Bee was held this past Friday at the Bryce Valley High School. Judges for the event were Jim Pollitt, Panguitch and Calre Ramsay, Tropic. Acting as pronouncer was Mary Rich. Overall winner of the competition was Ginger Reaves, 14-year-old eighth grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Reaves of Panguitch. Putting forth an excellent effort in the competition also was Katherine Henry, seventh grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Henry, Bryce Canyon. Miss Henry experienced her difficulty in the spelling competition with the word "ellipse". Also included in the area competition were Sharon Munson, fourth grade daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Alan Munson and Peter Frandsen, fifth grade resident of Panguitch. Both Munson and Frandsen were extremely well prepared for competition and young Frandsen met his downfall with the word "miraculously." Many, many hours of study and thorough preparation preceded this regional event and now Miss Reaves faces the additional challenge of preparing for the upcoming state competition. The National Spelling Bee Is in its 52nd year. A uniform booklet of words to practice on it is distributed by the headquarters for this organization. This booklet lists typical words used in spelling bees all over the country. It also includes many difficult words V which may have been spelled by national champions in earlier contests held in Washington D.C. This will be Miss Reaves final attempt at becoming over-all national spelling bee winner as the competition is limited to grades 4 thru 8. Volunteer spelling coach, Jim Reaves of Panguitch expressed appreciation to Panguitch residents and businesses for their enthusiastic support of the spelling competition this year. Ginger Reaves 1 |
