"Bountiful" marks VanWagenens debut as a feature film producer lie shares the producing credit with Horton Foote, the r seieen-writeAcademy Award-winning 'Feels Good' "Feels good," he said about the ac- colades from such people as Vincent ( an by of the NVic York Tutu s and Charles Champlm of the Los A u teles Tutu's The fact that the film's box office receipts rose 200 percent in Us first week didn't hurt either. The film will open the United States Film Fes tival Friday at 8 p m. in the Hegency Theatre, 2740 Parleys Way It would be hard to choose a more appropriate film to open this year's festival. First of all, it is a fine work about such basic things as compassion and keeping dreams alive It fea tures a superb cast led by Page and including John Heard. He had been set to direct Burt Reynolds and Dollv Par ton in the doomed film version ol Best Little Whorehouse," but found himself out of the project after a disagreement with the sludm barking the project Masterson and his wile Carlin Glvnn were serving as resourct people at Sundance when he revealed his desire to try anolher film proje Robert Bedford advised him to liud "a small pioject," one lhat he w.is passionate about and make it on a low budget The first thing that came to Master son's mind was Horton Footes play "The Trip to Bountilul The work had first appeared on Possible Oscar about the possibility of a nomination from the beginning," hd said "Now, it's the Everest that everybody is pushing for. If we could just get a nomination, not to mention the Oscar itself, it would mean an enormous amount to a picture like It We thought this I ' "Goodyear Television Playhouse' in 1953 as a teleplay It starred Lillian Gish as Carrie Watts, an elderly woman penned up in a Houston apartment with tier son and his shrewish wife Carrie longs to return to Bountiful, the rural area where she grew up and wheie she raised her children. Recalled Impact Masterson saw the play when it was mounted on Broadway in the early 'IOs, again with Lillian Gish Masterson remembered the impact the play had on him more than two decades later while at Sundance Following Bedford's advice, he telephoned Horton Foote, and got his blessing lo proceed with the project And then Pete and Carlin asked if I would be interested in helping with the film," recalled VanWagenon. who was executive director of the Sundance Institute at the time, "It's the first time I'd ever heard of it. so I read the play that night " VanWagenen likens his duties as producer to those of a corporation's chief opciaimg officer He lined up iriWstois. hired key crew members, ri de herd on the production manager and director to make sure the film came in on schedule and on budget Artistic Contribution He seems to be most pleased with the artistic input lhat Ins job afforded him a voice in casting decisions, a chance to see a project he believed m a film he wanted lo see himself come to fruition, the opportunity to work with two people whom he particularly admires - Foote and Mas- terson "I learned a great deal on this incline,'' VanWagenen said "What I learned about Horton's materia) is thafactors fall instantly in love with it. Horton writes in such a way that an actor can bring a wealth of experience, ideas and training to a role They see all these possibilities where they can use I heir own inventiveness lloiton does not write down to an actor As Kim Stanley said. 'There are only two playwrights whose woik I would do with no questions asked Checkov and Horton F'oote ' Next Project While VanWagenen is back at Sundance; lu is eager to produce anolher film IBs new project, the script of whu h is in its first rewrite, is a film version of Maurme Whipple's Thu mill Joshua "There are three kinds of material lhat appeal to me," said VanWagenen. "One is material that has a strong human dimension, like Trip to Bourn iful.' Films that deal with the small spaces in human character.
