But it is mainly a support group. The group encourages women to enter the science-oriente- d fields, said Gretch-e- n Walker, a senior mechanical engineering student. She said that many women tend not to enter the engineering fields because they dont have a good enough background in the mathematics and science. My background in mathematics and science was stronger than most of the women I know. Anyone can dn it if they have the right background," she said. She explained that many women tend to enter the engineering fields because their fathers or brothers entered the fields. This holds true for Audrey Huerta, a recent mechanical engineering graduate. She entered the field because her father is a physicist. It is second nature to me. 1 grew up with all the terminology and 1 wasnt afraid of it. Entering her final quarter in the department, Ms. Walker says there is no outright discrimination in the college. There are always the few men who might be sexist but you find that in every career, she said. I think there is probably more discrimination in the industry rather than in the school. Though there is little discrimination that goes on in the college, Ms. Huerta feels there is a problem in role models. There are very few women to look up to in the field. Most of the professors and teachers are men, very few are women, she said. She feels this will change as more women become interested in teaching in the field. Most women realize that when they enter this field they wont have many role models because it is an area really just opening to women, said Ms. Walker. Women and men in the department must complete two years of prerequisite classes before they are accepted into the engineering college. And many students dont make it through the first two years. The engineering programs are set programs but it up as four-yea- r seems that most students take at least five years to graduate. It takes a lot of time and effort to get through, she said. Maintaining a file is easier than setting one up. The first step in open faculty have come a long way since days 20 years ago when they had to fight to get a bathroom in the University of Utah Merrill Engineering Building. About the only women in the department were secretaries who had to go to another building to use the restroom. After a major crusade to get womens restrooms in the engineering building women finally began to feei accepte 1 in the department. It is no longer uncommon to see a woman walk into an engineering class. In fact its quite common to see many women walk into engineering classes. The U. of U. Engineering College is all divided into seven departments of which include women. Marvel Leader, secretary for the Dean of Engineering, has been with the department for 16 years and says she remembers when walking down the hall and seeing women was very unusual. Though the ratio of men to women is significant, more and more women are entering the field of engineering which at the university includes biological engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, material science and engineering and mechanical and industrial engineering. enrollment According to 1983-8- 4 statistics there were 3,578 students enrolled in the graduate and undergraduate engineering programs. Of that number 471 were women (427 undergraduates and 44 graduate students). school year During the 1965-6- 6 there were six women in the undergraduate program out of 1,027 and one woman out of 161 graduate students. The number of women entering the engineering department increases each year, said Ms. Leader. One reason for this surge of women in this field is the encouragement women get to go into technical fields rather than traditional fields which had been associated with women. The Society of Women Engineers, a national group of professors and students, encourages women to go into technical fields.
