She entered the field because her father is a physicist. It is second nature to me. 1 grew up with all the terminology and 1 wasnt afraid of it. Entering her final quarter in the department, Ms. Walker says there is no outright discrimination in the college. There are always the few men who might be sexist but you find that in every career, she said. I think there is probably more discrimination in the industry rather than in the school. Though there is little discrimination that goes on in the college, Ms. Huerta feels there is a problem in role models. There are very few women to look up to in the field. Most of the professors and teachers are men, very few are women, she said. She feels this will change as more women become interested in teaching in the field. Most women realize that when they enter this field they wont have many role models because it is an area really just opening to women, said Ms. Walker. Women and men in the department must complete two years of prerequisite classes before they are accepted into the engineering college. And many students dont make it through the first two years. The engineering programs are set programs but it up as four-yea- r seems that most students take at least five years to graduate. It takes a lot of time and effort to get through, she said. Marvel Leader, secretary for the Dean of Engineering, has been with the department for 16 years and says she remembers when walking down the hall and seeing women was very unusual. Though the ratio of men to women is significant, more and more women are entering the field of engineering which at the university includes biological engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, material science and engineering and mechanical and industrial engineering. enrollment According to 1983-8- 4 statistics there were 3,578 students enrolled in the graduate and undergraduate engineering programs.
