It can take 10 times as long to stop on an icy road as it does on a dry one. Freeway driving conditions cue sometimes conducive to tailgating. Everyone who has ever driven on a freeway during rush hour knows that if you get more than a length and a half behind a car in front, someone will immediately fill the void. Ill admit, thats a tough situation to deal with. But if you gauge carefully, usually there is a reasonably safe distance where few drivers will cut in front. Back off as far as you can and couple it with concentrated attention to traffic conditions ahead. Where you can see for a long distance, close it up a little If the view ahead is obscured, drop back a couple of car lengths. No doubt a few drivers will get the lead on you, but it will only cost a few seconds delay. All of the seconds gained in a lifetime of following too close will not make up for the time lost in a single car accident. Consider also that a safe following distance is the best defensive driving tactic against a driver who may be tailgating you. If you have some room to spare, you can compensate by letting off the brake momentarily as his grill appears larger and larger in your rear view mirror. Safety officials have developed a formula to help the average driver determine how far back a safe following distance might be. Its called the Two Second Rule. The way it works is to pick out an identifiable point on the road ahead. When the car in front of you passes that point, start counting. If you reach the same location before counting two seconds, then youre too close. The rule allows for certain variables such as speed. The faster youre going, the farther you will travel durd ing the interval, and the following distance increases accordingly. Other variables like weather two-secon- The message is the same in both examples. A vehicle owner is warning drivers who follow too close and who cause accidents when sudden stops become necessary. The complaint is justified. Investigating officers reported following too close as a contributing factor in 7 percent of all 1983 Utah highway accidents. Two people died and over 900 were seriously injured as a result. When deciding what constitutes following too close, we must determine how far back is far enough. Utah traffic law requires that a driver shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the high- g. Maintaining a file is easier than setting one up. The first step in opening a file is the creation of a template a form comprised of various fields, with numbers in some and printed information in others. After the original template is made, subsequent copies will appear on the screen upon demand, so the user must only enter the next item to be listed. Retrieval requires loading the data pack, and, by way of a number of confusing commands, asking for the desired information. With much use, however, Smart Filers complex commands eventually will become second nature. As with most home-us- e oriented filing programs, users should determine if they really have enough information to record before acquiring such a program. Though convenience would appear to be the watchword, Smart Filer seems to be better designed for those running a business from home rather than for general way. Those readers not fluent in legal-es- e are still left to wonder what reasonable and prudent means. Many chronic sufferers try to disregard the irritation while others rely on massage, liniments and sometimes addictive pain killers. Effective treatment of back pain, and almost all chronic pain, is no longer a neglected area in modern medicine. Yet an ancient method, acupuncture, is now being explored as an effective method of relieving back pain, headache, sports injuries and arthritis pain. Acupuncture is a way of goading g the system of the body into action. Although it is not an analgesic itself, it inhibits the relay of a pain message. Some people think of acupuncture as black magic or faith healing, said Dr. Raymond Middleton, a Sandy family practitioner and acupuncture specialist. But as with any new order of things, more and more people have begun to accept it as an effective treatment for pain and other ailments, he said. Middleton, the only specialist in acupuncture in Sandy, treats over 50 patients a week with the ancient art. The ailments that respond best to acupuncture treatment seem to be arthritis, muscle strain, headaches and chronic pain, although Middleton says he has had success 60 to 70 percent of the time with acupuncture as an inducement to control weight and to stop smoking.
