There are over 2 million people suffering growth retardation or growth failure in the United States, according to the foundation. Many serious difficulties confront those individuals, including health, social, vocational and educational problems. Growth problems vary," Mrs. Petersen said. She said there are over 100 causes of short stature some of them chromosomal, genetic, hormonal or skeletal. Mrs. Petersen became involved in the program when she realized four years ago after her child had a growth problem. My daughter is d and I want her to understand why. I want her to feel comfortable talking about the problem, Mrs. Petersen said. fit' Her daughter doesnt understand that she has a growth problem right now, but when she grows up she will need to know. There are some critical times in childrens lives, Mrs. Petersen said. These times will be when a child begins school and realizes that he or she is smaller then friends. The symposium is by Serono Symposia USA," The Human Growth Foundation and the Little People of America and meets requirements for four contact hours of credit for physicians through the University of Utah and for nurses through the Utah Nursing Association. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Registration at the door is 37 for health professionals, 34 for parents and $1 for each additional family member. By Shia Kapos Tribune Staff Writer Female engineering students and faculty have come a long way since day' 20 years ago when they had to fight to get a bathroom in the University of Utah Merrill Engineering Building. About the only women in the department were secretaries who had to go to ano'ther building to use the restroom. After a major crusade to get womens restrooms in the engineering building women finally began to feel accepted in the department. It is no longer uncommon to see a woman walk into an engineering class. In fact its quite common to see many women walk into engineering classes. The U. of U. Engineering College is divided into seven departments all of which include women. Marvel Leader, Secretary for the Dean of Engineering, has been with the department for 16 years and says she remembers when walking down the hall and seeing women was very unusual. Though the ratio of men to women is significant, more and more women are entering the field of engineering which at the university includes biological engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, material science and engineering and mechanical and industrial engineering. enrollment According to 1983-.8- 4 statistics there were 3,578 students enrolled in the graduate and undergraduate engineering programs. Of that number 471 were women (427 undergraduates and 44 graduate students). school year During the 1965-6- 6 there were six women in the undergraduate program out of 1,027 and one woman out of 161 graduate students. The number of women entering the engineering department increases each year, said Ms. Leader. One reason for this surge of women in this field encouragement women get to go into technical fields rather than traditional fields which had been associated with women. The Society of Women Engineers, a national group of professors and students, encourages women to go into technical fields. The universitys society holds workshops throughout the year. But it is mainly a support group. The group encourages women to enter the science-oriente- d fields, said Gretch-e- n Walker, a senior mechanical engineering student She said that many women tend not to enter the engineering fields be This coupon good for 10 classes at SEW THRIFTY $1450 Childrens & Adult Sizes. The engineering programs are set programs but it up as four-yeseems that most students take at least five years to graduate. It takes a lot of time and effort to get through, she said. Because of the difficulty of the program many students quit before fin ishing. Women have more tendency to quit because they havent been brought up to be a role model, Ms. Walker said They arent used to being the domi nant figure. For this reason it maj be easier for a woman to drop out However the program isnt anj more difficult for a woman to com if sht plete than it is for a man makes the effort, Ms. Walker said. Because it isnt as common to set women in the classes professors tenc to remember the women, she said. SEPT. 5th thru SEPT. 21st strations. Fabrics women become interested in teaching in the field. Most women realize that when they enter this field they wont have many role models because it is an area really just opening to women, said Ms. Walker. My background in mathematics and science was stronger than most of the women I know. Anyone can do it if they have the right background, she said. She explained that many women tend to enter the engineering fields because their fathers or brothers entered the fields. This holds true for Audrey Huerta, a recent mechanical engineering graduate. She entered the field because her father is a physicist. It is second nature to me. I grew up with all the terminology and I wasnt afraid of it. Entering her final quarter in the department, Ms. Walker says there is no outright discrimination in the college. There are always the few men who might be sexist but you find that in every career, she said. I think there is probably more discrimination in the industry rather than in the school. Though there is little discrimination that goes on in the college, Ms. Huerta feels there is a problem in role models. There are very few women to look up to in the field. Most of the professors and teachers are men, very few are women, she said.
