Show HS The Salt Lake Tribune TRAVEL Sunday,September 10, 1995 low for my truck. I didn’t know how notto getto it either. Never TRAVELER'S BOOKSHELF By Al Haas SNIGHT-RIDDER NEWS SERVICE Reading Sue Hubbellis like eating fresh, homemade strawberry ice cream, but without the calorie and cholesterol guilt trip. Herstuff is ice-cream easy and delicious, not to mention offbeat, highly original, and ever so charming. These qualities are quite evidentin her book Far-Flung Hubbeii (Random House, hardcover, $21). Subtitled Essays From the American Road, this August publication is a collection of 13 travel pieces, many of which appeared originally in the New Yorker magazine. Together, they form a wonderfully entertaining tapestry of Americanlife. Hubbell’s Americanaincludes a look at truck-stop etiquette and the Bowling Alley Hall of Fame. There are a report on Elvis sight- ings, and a summerlong quest for the perfect pie called “The Great American Pie Expedition.” There's also a funny story on American tabloids, as well as a delightful examinationofthe assorted insanities that make up the Boston driving experience. In addition to being entertained, we learn quite a bit from Hubbell’s national wanderings with her German shepherd, Tazzie, in a three-quarter-ton pickup. Welearn, for example, that one should “never eat pie within one mile of an interstate highway,” In the piece “Space Aliens Take Over the U.S. Senate,” we learn that tabloids have deeper literary roots than we might imagine. “Tn a sense, tabloids — thatis, newsin condensed form (the word ‘tabloid’ wasregistered in 1884 as a trademark for condensed substances used in pharmacy) — have beenwith usin oral tradition ever since people began entertaining one another with ballads and popularstories. “A 17th-century ballad told of a phantom (VEL Serving Utah Since 1982 id 1 i i Autumn in New E: Massachusetts, tts, New XXIXKXIXXNYLILAXXXKXXTAXXXENX TAXI XXIII LKLILANXXILL XXX ELIA LIIIIIIIIIE: XXXXIXX URS! threw Alabama recently, the lovely beaches, magnificent mountains, and enough Civil War battlefields and founding-father estates to put the most fanatical history buff in remission. The author, a family-travel expert, doesn’t seem to miss any. Stapen has assembled more than 150 of the state’s most family-friendly sites and makesit easy to plan a day trip, weekend journey, or weeklong excursion. @ Adventures in Science & drivers there seemed to him unbelievably courteous, deliberate and carefui. Tt got on his nerves. “Why don't they ‘drive?’” he askedhis wife. “In addition to being populated by drivers who make Attila the Hun seem terminally wimpy, Boston is an impossible city to find one’s way aroundin. According to Hubbell, “cabbies routinely pilot the lost through Bostonstreets.” “Floydis a truck driver who has been delivering Russell Stover candy to the same warehouse in Boston for 15 years. ‘Tried it on my own a couple of times,””’ he says.“I figured hell, I can deliver in Nashville, which is impossible; Stauffer; the Washington Book ~-Hydes Encore: Tours: & Travel. According to Hubbell, “Boston driving skills and way-finding are very special. It is said that Boston’s streets are laid out on 17thcentury cow paths, therefore the way to drive in Bostonis to think like a 17th-century cow.” Hubbell also reports that “a practiced Boston driver is unsuited fortraffic elsewhere.
