With copper, brass and polished nickel replacing chromeinfittings. And the efficient use of space being married to style just as it was in classic Greek and Romantimes. This emphasis on rich, natural materials and thoughtful design has eleyated an often cold and private place te a warm andinviting sanctuary. “As stress levels go up ... the bathroom is moving from a functional place to more of an environment,” says Sean Keller, associate director of the market research firm Yankelovich Partners. “One “CITY MORTGAGE eee and glossy surfaces in inlaid patterns. The gleaming brass fittings are a return to vintage appeal. “Chromehasvery little warmth as compared to brass,” says Rudolph. In new structures such as the Mar home, elements are often compartmentalized by function —- a double sink set off by a long Corian counter and cherrywood cabinets, a separate chamberforthe toilet, and two dressing closets, for example. These “rooms” within a room allow more than one person to use the bathroom at the same time. Even when spaceis very limited, says Cheryl Hamilton, design director of Chicago Kitchen & Bath, people want to make the mostofit. Hamilton recently took on the challenge of updating the bath in an 1881 Victorian rowhousein thecity for clients Sheila and Wayne Vandenburg, whose workis in real estate acquisition. Theoriginal bath was “minute,” says Hamilton, only 5 by 8 feet. Theclients wanted a lot compressed into it however: a double showerarea with a steam unit, a vanity, a whirlpool with steps leading up to it and a commode. The area designated for the bathroom wasfar too small to incorporate the features they wanted. However, on the same floor was a OFFERED sr BY Clark 254-5000 DOUG 898-1510 (24 Hours) Home Show Award Winning Builder a ST ox, Our Plans & Lots or Yours GAS * Thetile is standard white ceram- ic, but it’s a combination of matte area where people want to be at peace and at comfort is in the bathroom.” That need for a spot where people can “center themselves” has led to today’s revolution in bathroom aesthetics. “Modern used to be very stark and plain,” says Claudia Skylar, an architect with the Chicago firm Mastro & Skylar. “Now thereis a different aesthetic. There’s a lot of emphasis on each material and surface coming together as a composition, whether bathrooms are traditional or modern in style.” “Things have changed a lot from the hotel-lobby school of decorating,” says Mary Dugan, showroom manager for Ann Sacks Tile & Stone. ‘People wantthetile in their bathrooms to be a piece of art. “People want to put tile in their house and makeit look as though it werethere for a long, long time,” says Dugan, whose Chicago showroom is selling a lot of limestone andslate. As long ago, in fact, as ancient history. “The Romans and the Greeks used to use this stone,” real estate developer Jon Mickelson says of the travertine that lines the 200square-foot bathroom in his Chicagoloft. “Thefirst time I saw this References Upon Request ma TIRED OF YARD WORK?
