Show The Salt Lake Tribune UTAH/NATION Sunday, Kidnap-Murder: code as the Tapia family. So far, none has developed as a likely suspect. ManyDetails But Few Clues @ From Previous Page home. Narcotics officers found one ounce of cocaine and a .22caliberpistol. Charges against Lewine were dropped; Roberto spent three months in jail after pleading guilty to possession of a danger- ous weapon bya restricted person, a third-degree felony. The felony was reduced to a class A misdemeanorafter he successfully completed his parole. “My gut feeling is the [Tapia] family didn’t do it,” Pahl said. A Shy Girl Sings: Lewine and Roberto alwaysliked to stay home with their children. They didn’t throw wild parties. Rosie’s parents occasionally had friends over for a championship boxing match on cable TV or for a barbecue. Usually Rosie was shy when she greeted anadultforthefirst time. “But after you got to know her she’d warm up to you,” said Jeff C. Black, a volunteertutor in Ro- sie’s kindergarten ciass. Esmeralda and Emilia Elizondo’s friends were uotallowed to hang outat the apartment. If the two older girls wanted to be with their friends, they were usually required to meet them away from home. Emilia often tock Rosie to the mall. During Emilia’s “Quincenera,” a coming-out party usually held for 15-year-old girls, Rosie sang and dancedbefore the crowd of teen-agers andadults. A Norma! Neighborhood: The neighborhood Rosie lived in is a busy one. The Glendale Golf Course and park are nearby. Around the corneris the Raging Waters Theme Park, which attracts thousands ofstrangers. There are 300 units — and more than 1,000 residents — in the Hartland Apartments complex where the family lives. Checking outall the residents and visitors is nearly impossible. “The numbers in this case are astounding,” said Det. Chuck Oliver, another homicide investigator assigned to the Tapia murder. Detectives are concentrating on listed and suspected sex offenders who live within the same zip Looking for Similarities: While he waits for word from the FBI, Pahlalso is looking at other similar child abductions around the country where suspects snatcheda child out through her bedroom window. The mostfrighteningly similar case is the murder of Monica DaSilva, a 7-year-old Reno, Nev., girl killed in September of 1990. Monica’s mother called 911 the morning of Sept. 24, 1990, and said someone had kidnapped Monica, gaining access through the girl's bedroom window. The screen was out and there was a scuff mark underneath the window. Just as in Rosie’s case, there was another child in Monica’s room. Monica’s 4-year-old brother was sleeping, but he did not hearor see anything. Monica’s bones were discovered a monthlaterin a desert canyon five miles east of Reno. Reno Police Det. Ron Dreher has been trying to find Monica’s killer for nearly five years. He has tracked down dozensof admitted child molesters, including one whofalsely claimed to havekilled Monica. He hasturned to fellow detectives in New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Washington, Ohio and California, and has reached out to the FBI. But the case remains unsolved. “IT would love to close this case,” Dreher said. “We're batting zero when it comes to our child killer.” Pahl has compared notes with Dreher, but he realizes there is a danger in spending too much time leoking at other cases far from Salt Lake City. In child-abduction and sexualassault cases similar to Rosie's. the suspect usually is someone wholives nearby. For example: Johnny Ray Johnson, an Oakwood, Ga., chickenplant egg gatherer, lived 200 yards away from his 5-year-old victim. On April 25, 1992, he climbed through the girl’s bedroom window, carried herout the front door and sodomizedher in a nearby run-down cinder-biock building. Helet her go. Police interviewed all the girl’s neighbors but came up with no leads. Finally, they traveled to the state’s crime lab hoping to find a match to a fingerprint found on the window. A computer came up with Johnson’s name in four min- P 10, 1995 All enero “7 would love to close this case... We're batting zero when it comes to our child killer.?? David Lee Thompson traveled around the country delivering trucks and vans. Healso crawled through windows to molest girls in small towns from Texasto Massachusetts. Hedidn’t start out that way. Incest washis first sex crime. While in an Indiana prison for molesting two relatives, Thompsonlistenedto his cellmate, Glenn Astett, talk about the thrill of climbing through a bedroom windowto rapegirls. “He thought it sounded like a good idea,” said Barry Story, a Wells County, Ind., sheriff's office detective who has interviewed and gotten confessions from Thompson numerous times. Once Thompson was released from prison in 1988, he sought out a new thrill. Usually, he would stop in a smali town, walk the streets looking for children and come back late at night. Sometimes he cut telephone wires, erawled through an open window andcarried his victim away. TAILORED CLOTHING He wasarrested July 1, 1993, in Waco,Texas, after calling a missing children’s hotline in San Francisco. He made threats about molesting and cannibalizing children, though no evidence of him murdering a child has been found. Thecall was traced to his sister's home. When they aren't looking at other cases, interviewing molesters or reviewing reports, Salt Lake detectives Pahl and Oliver spend much oftheirtimefielding telephonecalls. But they doubt they will get a cail from someone who heard ihe killer confess. In many other types of homicides, the murderer often is caught because he told a friend or a jailhouse cellmate abouthis crime. Butnot the child molester, Oliver said. “That's a bad brand for someoneto have.” Selected suits & sportcoats There is a nominaltee foralterations. Basic, non-seasonal merchandise is notincluded.
