The Wes‘ern Hemisphere’s greatest ancient civilization occupied southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador from 2,000 B.C. until the conquest by the Spanish in the 1500s. La Ruta Maya or the Mayan Route, a plan by the governments of these countries to highlight the cultural and ecological significance of the Maya's lands by promoting tourism and responsible resource protection and conservation, was my bird watchingdestination in the summer of 1994. In addition to centuries old limestone ruins and huraid tropical rain forest, my goal was to experience the sheer numbers andvariety of tropical birds found in the region, particularly Belize. The adventure began with visit to the Belize Zoo, 29 miles west of Belize City. The zoc was founded by Sharon Matola after the filming of the wildiife movie ‘Path of the Raingods”in 1983. The z00has since grown, and now featuresover 100 animals, including keel-billed toucans, spectacled owls, king vultures, great horned owls, scarlet macaws, collared aracaris, crested guans, curassows and an ornate hawk-eagle. Thezoo provides an opportunity to see these birds up close before headinginto the rain forest. More than 500 species of birds have been recorded in Belize, andofthese, about 150 on the cayes. Take a Step BackinTime: The Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch By Kurt Repanshek SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE STANLEY, Idaho — Mention dude ranching in a crowd and you runthe risk of conjuring images of dusty trail rides and horse sweat, not a late-night soak in a hot spring or fine wines at dinner. Now,I've got nothing againsttrail rides or horse sweat, but when my wife and I headed to the Idaho Rocky Mountain the banks of the famous Salmon River.” The Salmon is born in the Sawtooth Ranch in the heart of Idaho’s Sawtooth Range, not far from the ranch that Win- Valley I couldn't get the ranch’s hot spring out of my mind. “Relax your mind and pamper your body in our natural hot water pool,” read the brochure. “Thesetting is perfect, on ston Paul, a Frigidaire distributor from New York, put on the map in 1930 as the invitation-only “Idaho Rocky Mountain Club.” Paul put a lot of work into the 1,000- acre hand-hewn ranch thatis surrounded today by the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
