Kay has surrendered his licenses to practice and prescribe after admitting he had been drinking before going to work ata Bountiful clinic on the morning of Aug. 17. Kay wastreating the son of twe police officers at 9:30 a.m., whenthe parents smelled alcohol and noticed he appeared intoxicated. They reported the incident that day and when investigators from the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional arrived at 11 am., Kay claimed he had been drinking late the night before. But a blood test found he hada blood-alcohol contentof .06 percent. In 1992, Kay was disci- never-worn, never-washed Levi's jeans in the world. The pants appear to date back to 1927 or 1928. They are crisp and unfaded — and available for purchase, at a price acceptable to the Wrights. Thelatest offer is $30,600. The Wrights, who run a vintage-clothing store in Denver called Boss Unlimited, found the trousers (waist 36 inches, length 33 inches) in May. A man identifying himself as a retired salesman for Levi Strauss & Co. sold them the jeans for $2,500. He said he ran across them years ago and threw them in a drawer. Since acquiring the venerable denim, the Wrights have been receiving offers that wouldn't be inappropriate for cloth of gold. A clothingcollector offered $25,000 for the jeans. No sale. A clothing deaier from Japan flew into town recently and offered $30,600. Says Cynthia Wright: “He laid them down onthefloor andstarted touching them. He just went nuts.” But the Wrights held out. David Little, author of an up- coming book about jeans called Vintage Denim, says the pants are authentic. “They look like they just came off the rack,” he says, but they sport suspender buttons and a“buckle back,” an old-time device that allows the pants to be cinched withouta belt. At least one prospective buyer isn’t planning to make an offer. “The price is way out of my ball- park,” says Lynn Downey, Levi Strauss & Co.’s historian and blue-jean museum curator. “It's out of anybody's ballpark.” a R.N. SURRENDERS LICENSE: Last July, registered nurse Leslie A. Johnson was questioned by her employer about patient complaints that she was not providing proper care because she was sleeping in patient rooms and was notgiving out prescribed pain medication. In August, she admitted to an investigator from the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing that, since 1984, she had stolen percocet, demerol and morphine and falsified patient records to cover the theft. Rather than undergo a hearing on those ailegations of misconduct, Johnsen surrendered her license. The Highland, Utah County, nursegot in trouble with licensing officials in 1989, after she wrotea fictitious prescription for percocet. She wasput on probation for two years and herlicense reinstated in 1992. Before Johnson reapplies for her license again, she must complete a drugtreatment program and prove she has been free fromillegal and inappropriate drug use foratleast oneyear.
