Show B7 The Salt Lake TribuneSPORTS Sunday, September 10, 1995 _ Tarahumaransin1 Front At Wasatch 100 Race By Craig Hansell THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE MILL CREEK CANYON — A pair of Tarahumara Indians, running unofficially, were leading the Wasatch 100 mile Endurance Runat Elbow Fork herelate Saturday afternoon. TheIndians, running in sandals carved from the treads of car tires, and three pacersied the rest of the pack by about 20 minutes. Sandy’s Dave Klein, who led the registered-runner field for much of the race, led the race’s second pack. The second groupalso included a Tarahumara Indian, wearing the distinctive bells. As of early evening noneofthe field had droppedoutin the race from East Layton to Midway. Laurie Staton, for example, was one ofthe first athletes to attemptthe race. Fromthefiye runners who began this event in 1980, Alvey’s 2-Run Blast Wins ar For Miller at Softball Nationals Gordy Ainsleigh, 48, from the Staton wasoneof the two whofinished. Now she is going for her 8th Wasatch 100 finish. Ogden's Rick May, Salt Lake’s Fred Reimer and Orem’s Fred Denysare all running their tenth Wasatch100. This year’s run is clouded in controversy. Rick Fisher, repre- senting the Tarahumaras, did not register the Indians in time to meetthe 150-runner deadline. “We turned down over 80 people since mid-May and we could not in good conscience let them [the Indians] run,” said organizer John Grobbenat Friday’s pre-race meeting. Grobben said this year’s field weighed 22,000 pounds. But the 11 tons of pre-race weight probably got lighter somewhere on the slopes of the Wasatch. One first-time Wasatch 100 runneris no strangerto ultra-distance mountain events. Auburn, Calif., area is the man generally credited with starting the mountain-1-Tunning craze. “Twas entered in the Western States Trail Ride and my good friend sold me a lame horse,” Ainsleigh said. “That was in 1973. In 1974, the 20th anniversary of the ride, I asked them if I could run it.” The history of mountain-trail running has been evolving ever since. Ainsleigh has 10 Western States, three Vermont and one Leadville 100-mile races to his credit now. He hopes to add the Wasatch. “Now all over the Englishspeaking world I ean find a 100mile race to run,” hesaid. Saturday, in the pre-dawn of east Layton, the 150-runnerfield took the line to continue Ainsleigh’s tradition. Thefield included 74 Utahns and 24 women. Asthis paper wentto press, the first runners were fighting fatigue and struggling through the night near Cascade Springs on hit ball. Pete Spoerl’s single drove in Ken Garinger with the tying run in the fourth inning. Tom Montgomery had three hits, includinga leadoff single in the 13th inning before Alvey’s two-run shot. MIDLAND, Mich. — Brett Al- vey’s two-run homerin the 13th inning led the world’s No. 2 ranked Larry H.
