Show Ask o teacher Editor: I was interested in reading a recent re-cent article in the Clipper about West Bountiful Elementary's extended-day program. My concern is that the article only provided the view of one parent and did not include in-clude the view of a teacher. 1 am a substitute teacher and I have taught at West Bountiful many times. My support goes out to the teachers that must teach the students at West Bountiful. The behavior of many of the students at times is very poor. The parents need to quit blaming this on the extended-day program, and look at their own children. Do they know how their child acts in school? I have on many occasions been amazed at the lack of respect a student stu-dent has toward any teacher, regardless of how many teachers he has. Respect should be taught mainly main-ly in the home! Also as to a larger salary, the 25 percent mentioned is well above what the teachers that I know receive for teaching extended day. The point I would like to make concerning con-cerning pay is that these extended-day extended-day teachers earn all that they receive and possibly should earn more. TTiese teachers are responsible responsi-ble for 60 plus students that they must grade papers, prepare materials mate-rials for, etc., and they work many more hours to accomplish this. I do agree there are many prob- V lems with the extended-day program, pro-gram, and it should be discontinued. However, there are problems of many kinds in every school. One way to alleviate some of these problems prob-lems is to be involved in our children's education. I have very seldom seen parent volunteers at West Bountiful Elementary. I have volunteered in school for seven years, and as a substitute I have reconfirmed my belief that volunteers vol-unteers are sorely needed and can be a great benefit in solving some of these problems as well as benefitting benefit-ting your own child. Let's work together and support our teachers and give them the lift needed to teach our children. Name withheld |
