Show 'Cats log win over Bulldogs Prep soffball teams continue to struggle against region foes By ALAN HAACKE Clipper Correspondent BOUNTIFUL Local girls' Softball teams squared off against some of the state's toughest this past week. Woods Cross chalked up one win and one loss, while Bountiful also won one game, but dropped two others. Both Davis and View-mont View-mont fell in matches played on Tuesday. WX 6, JUDGE 5 The Woods Cross Wildcats were crushed Tuesday by the Tooele Buffaloes, 21-10. The Lady Buffaloes, the state's top team, came out swinging, swing-ing, blasting the 'Cats with eight runs in the first inning. "We made some mistakes," said Wildcat coach Kevin Wilson. "You don't make mistakes early against a team like Tooele and hope to recover. That inning killed us,' he said. A double by Wildcat junior Jeness Jones helped bring the 'Cats eight runs in the last inning, inn-ing, but the Woods Cross team never recovered. Teammate Lori Kirkwood also hit two RBIs for Woods Cross. Charity Richards and Amy Whittle pitched for the Wildcat team. Thursday, the Wildcats regained their composure edging out Judge for a 6-5 win. Wildcat one-woman-team Charity Richards not only pitched pitch-ed the entire game, but nailed a triple and one RBI as well. Richards has batted over a 700 average thus far in the season. With an overall record of 5-4, the Wildcats are seen as one of the region's top contenders. "We're not making the mistakes we were last year," said Wilson. TOOELE 14, BOUNTIFUL 1 Bountiful coach Brad Chris-tensen Chris-tensen guided his Lady Braves through a grueling week, playing three days in a row. Tuesday the Braves downed a beleaguered Judge squad 4-3 in what Christensen claimed was "a win our girls really deserved." "We needed that win. The girls have played very hard so far this year. They deserved it (the win), and they got it," he said. The Braves traveled to Granite Wednesday for their second se-cond game in as many days. Braves Rochelle Fillmore, Katie Johnson and Jenny Miller all came away with hits, but the Bountiful team fell to Granite for a 12-5 loss. Top-seated Tooele came to Bountiful for a shoot-out that left the Braves with another loss and a score of 14-1. "We had some real letdowns. But then, Tooele is a very tough team," said Christensen. CLEARFIELD 17, DAVIS 13 Davis took on Clearfield in a wild melee Tuesday, battling back and forth before succumbing succumb-ing to Clearfield 17-13. The Darts led the way, scoring five runs in the first inning, but rival Clearfield fought back in the third inning, crossing the plate for 10 of their own. Clearfield held on to win a match Dart coach Chi mane Creer cited as "our best offensive effort yet." Rebecca Huesser hit two doubles and a triple, while Jodee Barrett nailed two singles, and Chauny Morgan hit two RBIs for the Darts. "We lost, but I was very proud pro-ud of our girls. They played a great game," said Creer. BONNEVILLE 30, VIEW-MONT VIEW-MONT 1 Plagued by injuries, the Viewmont Vikings traveled to Bonneville, only to be whipped 30-1. With six players on the injured in-jured list. Viking coach Paige Adams remained optimistic. "The score was embarrassing, but it's somewhat misleading. Our girls hit pretty well. And a lot of Bonneville's scoring came from walks," she said. An injury to one of the Vikings' Vik-ings' top players added to the team woes. Char Holmes suffered suf-fered a bad bone bruise and was benched during Tuesday's bout. |
