Show Our Readers Write Remove food tax Holbrook qualified Dear Editor I am a registration agent and an election judge and as such am unable to do any campaigning, so am writing anonymously. We have an opportunity in this coming election to vote for a repeal of tax. The majority of people in this country think we are taxed too much and yet when the opportunity comes along to say "no more taxes we fall prey to the many tactics tac-tics being used to make us think that a repeal of this tax will hit too hard and will affect education and numerous nu-merous other services in the state. Just use your heads, citizens. What happens when you suddenly have less money to budget on in your homes? You learn to be more efficient and do without the things that don't really matter much anyway. Don't you think our city, county, state and federal governments govern-ments need to learn those same principles? If we deny them the money from sales taxes, maybe it will force them to become more efficient. ef-ficient. Maybe it will even do away with exorbitant expenses and poor management Don't you think it is about time that we stopped throwing throw-ing more money at the problems and really examined the issues? All of us have no doubt had to tighten our budgets during these hard economic times. Has it really hurt us? If we have had to, can't government learn to do the same thing? I am aware of expense accounts in various government departments that are totally unnecessary. I am aware of a school district who used funds allotted for texts for other purposes to thus make the public more pro-education during the last legislative session. I am aware of benefits to government employees that are beyond the businessman's dreams in terms of retirement and health. I am aware of one department in government that has a $30,000-plus slush fund There are many abuses in the federal government that we have all become aware of, and it should not surprise us that it also occurs in our state, counties and city governments. Why not take this opportunity and vote YES to repeal the sales tax on food? It's our one chance to say we are sick and tired of being taxed and demand more efficiency in government. Don't let the voices of vested interest groups use emotional emo-tional tactics to scare us into not repealing that tax. Maybe it can be a start and when we say no to taxation every chance we get, it will begin to make a difference and clean up the mess we are in. Did you ever stop to think of how many services we could buy if we could have all the money we earn and not give 40 percent away to the government to supply our needs? I think we can all do a much better job determining what is in our best interest. Please just ask yourselvesdo I want to be taxed or not? and don't listen to what they say the results will be. The money is there and they can cover the loss of that revenue very nicely with a few adjustments ad-justments in overall accountability. Please get involved and get out and vote vote yes to repeal the sales tax on food. Name Withheld Dear Editor: I want every voter in Davis County to know of the opportunity thy face on election day. They have the opportunity to elect the finest candidate ever presented for Davis County Commission J. Del! Holbrook. Holbrook is highly qualified for this office. He has vast experience in Davis County politics as the current cur-rent chairman of the Davis County Democratic Party and a former West Bountiful City administrator under two administrations. He is used to executive decisions as the president and managing director of his own small business. Unlike his opponent, he is familiar with Davis County issues and history. He has lived and raised his family in South Davis County for more than 45 years. Holbrook is ready and able to deal with Davis County's greatest problem-growth. He believes the infrastructure of Davis County must be upgraded to remain adequate yet affordable. We must have dependable depen-dable school, highway, law enforcement, en-forcement, health and safety systems. Further, we must secure the lifeblood of the West-water. Water acquisition and delivery is a top priority. Holbrook knows this and will act. Holbrook believes that U.S. Highway 89 should be made functional, func-tional, safe and accessible for those who use it as soon as possible. He believes in working with people and is committed to staffing the new county jail as our new sheriff, Glen Clary, requires. He believes the county commission needs to stop its internal bickering and get down to running the county in an efficient, effective manner. He believes that if the pipeline must go through South Davis County, Coun-ty, its effects must be blunted to maintain our beautiful environment and make sure our citizens are as safe as possible. He believes that in today's changing economy Davis County citizens need better educational educa-tional services. He believes government waste must stop. Holbrook believes in the voters. As a Democrat, he believes the food tax is a regressive tax that burdens the poor. However, he has equal concern that the needs of the cities and the state that are met by this tax must be preserved. He believes the voters should decide what they want and, as Davis County Commissioner, Com-missioner, he will make their decision deci-sion work. Holbrook doesn't want to be county commissioner to add a credential to his resume. He want to be commissioner to serve the people of Davis County. Davis County is his home and he wants to make it better for his family and yours. Holbrook as Davis County Commissioner will bring a new and needed voice to county government. govern-ment. Davis County has been controlled con-trolled by one party for 38 years. It's time for a sensible change; time for economic progress. Davis county coun-ty needs productive problem-solving problem-solving through balanced government; govern-ment; needs new, environmentally friendly industry such as high-tech research and development; needs to provide careers with benefits including in-cluding high salary employment; needs individual tax relief. Davis County needs J. Dell Holbrook. You can make a difference. Vote for J. Dell Holbrook on Nov. 6. James B. Taylor Farmington |
