BOUNTIFUL Davis County residents with hidden medical problems prob-lems are invited to join 6,000 other Utahns with Medic Alert bracelets to prevent emergencies from becoming tragedies. According to Ron Bouck, president presi-dent of the Utah Chapter Medic Alert Foundation International, the system is proven and offers a lifetime membership at a low cost. Medic Alert's three-part life-protecting life-protecting system consists of: a metal alerting device or emblem worn as a bracelet or necklace. This bears the staff of Aesculapius, the internationally recognized insignia of the medical profession, and the words "Medic Alert" in red. On the reverse side are engraved the special medical conditions of the wearer such as "allergic to bee stings" or "takes anticoagulants." Also engraved on the back are the carrier's membership number and the number of the Medic Alert emergency answering service. Each member receives a wallet card with personal and medical information in-formation in addition to that engraved en-graved on the emblem. The emergency record may be updated at any time and when the record is updated, a new wallet card is prepared with the new information and sent to the member. A 24-hour emergency answering service is available to emergency personnel via a collect telephone call from anywhere in the world. The number of Medic Alert's emergency "hotline" is engraved on the emblem and printed on the wallet card. Professional education programs are conducted by Medic Alert annually. an-nually. These programs are directed to medical and other emergency service personnel, urging them to routinely look for the Medic Alert emblem in every medical emergency emergen-cy and to take appropriate action when they find it.
