Show Junior college proposed At a recent "Meet the Candidate" Can-didate" gathering, J. Del! Holbrook, candidate for Davis County Commissioner, proposed that a junior college be built in Davis County. Holbrook stated that he has "two proposals that would lead to better learning facilities for the citizens of Davis County. "I believe that serious seri-ous consideration should be given to creating a junior college and adult educational center in Davis County should match the quality of the library systems in Salt Lake and Weber counties. Holbrook explained Davis County Coun-ty is the third most heavily populated county in Utah. "The growth projected for Davis County by the Davis County Planner indicates in-dicates that there will be a need for a college in our community. ' Holbrook said Davis County has qualified people to staff a college, and he believes there are a sufficient suffi-cient number of current students and potential students to justify a college located between Salt Lake City and Ogden. He suggested the current Davis County Jail and its surrounding buildings, which will be vacated when the new jail is open, could house a junior college. "We should . start planning this college now to alleviate al-leviate the ever-increasing costs that are attendant with commuting large distances to school or with moving to a distant area where schools exist," said Holbrook. Holbrook suggested that an interim project which would help county education would be the upgrading of the county library system. "The county libraries are an ideal place to start. An active promotional pro-motional campaign to alert the public pub-lic to the services already provided by the library system should be undertaken," he said. He explained that two new volunteer vol-unteer programs, a delivery system to take library materials to people who are homebound and new adult literacy program, should be publicized. pub-licized. "While the book budget continues con-tinues to grow, there are other items the library system could use to provide pro-vide better educational services." Holbrook said computer links to national automated databases, personal per-sonal computers with educational software for use by the general public, pub-lic, and more audio and visual learning learn-ing aids are needed in county libraries. |
