Show Lody Darts defeat Viewmont in O.T. thriller By DIRK FACER Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL While much of the attention was focused on Friday's boys game between Davis and Viewmont, the lady cagers put on a show of their own. Just hours before the showdown in Kaysville, the Lady Darts and Lady Vikings squared off in an exciting region one encounter. And after some drastic point swings sw-ings and numerous clutch performances, perfor-mances, Davis had captured a thrilling thrill-ing 47-46 come-from-behind overtime over-time victory. 4I'm worn out. I have laryngitis, said Lady Dart coach Chimane Creer. "I knew Viewmont would be up after beating Bonneville. Bonne-ville. I don't think our kids expected ex-pected this. Viewmont is a good team and you can't count them out Friday. Three-point goals Viewmont 2 (Checketts) Davis improved to 4-3 in region one and 6-9 overall, while Viewmont View-mont fell to 2-6 and 4-12. "What a game. That's all I can say," said Lady Viking coach Lori Salvo. "All my kids were ready to play. Viewmont and Davis are big rivals. It was a tough one to lose. It meant a lot to us." Viewmont broke from the gates early and held a 12-6 lead after one period of play. Nikki Checketts, who finished with a game-high 18 points, scored six points in the opening session. The Lady Vikes continued their mastery of Davis in the second period by once again limiting the Lady Darts to just six points. A 6-2 run to open the quarter gave Viewmont View-mont a 20-8 advantage with 5:38 left in the half. By halftime, the Lady Vikes held a 23-12 lead. However, the momentum shifted in the second half. "At halftime we had a big talk as to whether we could execute," said Creer. "Wc woke up in the second half." Paced by standouts Jodi Wimmer, Rebecca Heusser and Regan Taylor, the Lady Darts outscored Viewmont 15-6 in the third quarter to reduce the deficit to 31-27 entering the fourth period. SEE RIVALS ON A-9 V Rivals CONTINUED FROM A-8 Wimmer, who joined Taylor for team-high honors with 11, scored seven and Heusser six during the )Lady Dart revival. In the final quarter of regulation, Davis took a 37-35 lead with 3:32 remaining after a basket by Heusser. Taylor added two free throws at the three-minute mark to give the Lady Darts a four-point advantage. The two squads traded I res with Viewmont creeping as viose as a point following a basket, at 41-40, by Nicole Bradley with 1 :49 to go. Davis responded with a basket by Wimmer as the contest entered its final minute. Neither team was able to alter the 43-40 score until Checketts buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. "When she had to, she made it," said Salvo in praise of Checketts. "It was awesome." Unfortunately for the Viewmont, Olady luck switched sides during the intermission. After Bradley gave the Lady Vikes a 45-43 lead with 2:46 remaining in overtime, Viewmont View-mont entered a dry spell which would last until late in the session. ; Davis countered with a basket by Natalie Pearson and free throws by Taylor and Heusser to secure the victory. "It wasn't our field goals that ; won this for us," Creer said. "It i was our free throws. I A basket by Viewmont's Bradley reduced the final margin to 47-46. ! "It was a morale taker-down," ; said Salvo. "(The officials) let the ! game get out of control. I thought ; the officials affected the outcome of this game." Viewmont is idle Tuesday with a bye, while the Lady Darts visit Roy at 4 p.m. r |
