Show Good year at Glen Canyon LAKE POWELL "1991 was a very good year for Glen Canyon Ca-nyon National Recreation Area. Not only was visitation up five percent per-cent over 1990, with total visits exceeding 3.2 million, but for the first time, with park records dating back to 1979, no accident-related fatalities were reported within the national recreation area," said Superintendent John O. Lancaster. Lancaster credits this excellent safety record to the park visitors and his park staff in educating the visitors in the possible dangers attributable at-tributable to previous fatalities. "With increased public information on boating safety and this year's low water problems and resultant hazards, we feel the visiting public has become more aware and is doing a better job of boating and enjoying other water recreation sports accident-free. ' ' Since 1979, the record high year for accident-related fatalities occurred oc-curred in 1982. During that year 13 accident-related deaths occurred, as well as one death from natural causes. Prior to 1991 , 1990 held the record low number of accident-related fatalities with a total of two and seven deaths from natural causes. Although 1991 experienced zero accident-related deaths, four deaths occurred from natural causes and one suicide. We are looking forward to another great year with no fatalities,' said Lancaster, and added, "All four marinas are fully accessible to all boats and we encourage people to come out and enjoy the magnificent resource here at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in a safe and lawful manner." |
