Show Bill offers animals protection The Humane Society of Utah issued is-sued a strong statement of support for House Bill 97, sponsored by Rep. Joanne Milner, an act designed to prohibit individuals in densely-populated densely-populated areas from driving down major thoroughfares with animals riding in an unprotected manner in an open vehicle. :. According to the Society's executive exe-cutive director, Gene Baierschmidt, the bill does not apply to livestock, dogs used in farming or ranching operations, and dogs being transpor-. transpor-. ted for the purpose of hunting. ' The bill will, however, protect , the many animals who are killed or severely, injured each year by fall- ing or being thrown from open vehicles ve-hicles onto the highway, said Mr. Baierschmidt "More than 100,000 dogs die mis way ; each year throughout the country," he said, adding that human safety is also a factor to consider. "If an animal jumps or falls from a moving vehi-, cle, another driver could suddenly swerve to avoid it and cause a seri-.ous seri-.ous problem," he said. - "i The bill has already passed the committee hearing, and the Society is urging its members to contact , (heir representatives and ask them to support passage of the bill in the House.
