Two members of that team, seniors Dave Lauder and Jeff Smith, both spotted this reporter and said, "Tonight's the upset." They said it like they believed it. They did. Five hours later, the Vikings were headed home winners of an exciting 3-2 Region Four soccer victory that marked the first time in over three years that anyone has beaten Woods Cross in a league soccer match. In fact, it was the Viking team of 1985 that last pulled the trick, and before that, Viewmont View-mont earned a split back in 1984 with the Wildcats. Friday night's game was a defensive defen-sive struggle from the outset, very physical and well-played. Woods Cross lost the services of junior Dave Simon at the 19-minute mark of the first half when he suffered a knee injury. His absence the rest of the game was clearly felt. It remained scoreless until the 28th minute, when Lauder took a pass in the middle, dribbled to the left and bounced a shot into the right corner of the net to give the Vikes a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, Lauder scored again, and this shot was truly tru-ly a thing of beauty. Taking a pass deep in the left corner, Lauder dribbled to almost the goal line before be-fore rifling a shot with his powerful left leg that found the inside top of the net. Viewmont took that 2-0 lead into the half. But as the teams switched ends, and Woods Cross gained the advantage of a strong southerly wind that Viewmont had enjoyed for most of the first half, the momentum switched as well. Five minutes into the second half, Tommy Tom-my Angelos put the Wildcats on the scoreboard with his 18th goal of the league season, making it 2-i. Woods Cross kept the pressure on Viewmont for the first 20 minutes of the half, as the Vikes had trouble crossing midfield. In the 27th minute, the Vikes found an opening down the left sideline. John Cook drove to the corner, then crossed to David Chidester, who scored to make it 3-1 for Viewmont. But Woods Cross wasn't done, as Angelos scored on a direct kick with four minutes left. A final barrage bar-rage of Woods Cross shots were defended, however, and the Vikes had the victory. WOODS CROSS 2 BOUNTIFUL 1 On Tuesday, the Braves gave the Wildcats all they wanted before Woods Cross earned a win. Sophomore Sopho-more Gary Olson had given Bountiful Boun-tiful a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, rebounding his own shot for the score. But an Angelos goal on an assist from Allred tied the game at 1-all at half time. The second half was also a defensive de-fensive battle, Woods Cross finally scoring when Simon tallied after the Wildcats had crossed the ball four times in front of the Bountiful goal. For the game, Woods Cross outshot Bountiful 30-13. Bountiful's contest at East last Friday was postponed when only one official showed up. It has tentatively ten-tatively been rescheduled for next Monday, May 9. DAVIS 9 HIGHLAND 0 DAVIS 3 EAST 0 The Darts picked up a pair of important victories last week, starting with a win over the Leopards on Tuesday.
